What You Should Know:

– ZeOmega®, a population health and interoperability technology company announced it has been selected by the Massachusetts Health Data Consortium (MHDC), a nonprofit advancing health data sharing, to transform prior authorization and clinical data exchange across Massachusetts.

– The initiative creates the nation’s first statewide FHIR®-based system designed to streamline communication between payers and providers, reducing administrative burdens and accelerating access to care.

Modernizing Prior Authorization Network Across Massachusetts

The collaboration between MHDC and ZeOmega represents a proactive move to modernize and simplify the archaic prior authorization framework, which has long been associated with inefficiency, treatment delays, and miscommunication. ZeOmega’s HealthUnity platform will enable healthcare organizations to replace outdated manual tasks, like faxing and phone calls, with real-time, automated approvals, thereby reducing payer-provider friction and driving faster, more coordinated care.

The deployment of this innovative system will be implemented through the New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), MHDC’s statewide network that connects major Massachusetts health plans and providers. HealthUnity will empower NEHEN participants to improve benefit checks, prior authorizations, clinical data exchange, and quality measurement—all through a single connection. By leveraging FHIR APIs and national data standards, the technology facilitates secure information sharing across the healthcare ecosystem.

MHDC selected ZeOmega following a competitive vendor selection process, recognizing its proven leadership in interoperability, deep experience in utilization and care management, and HealthUnity’s FHIR-native architecture, which is built to support scalable, multi-organization collaboration. The platform supports multiple access points, including integration with widely used EHRs and provider portals, and ensures compliance with federal requirements such as CMS’s Interoperability and Prior Authorization Final Rule.

“We are proud to partner with MHDC in launching this modern and replicable model for collaborative healthcare,” said Tony Sheng, ZeOmega’s Vice President of Interoperability. “This initiative reflects years of investment in building flexible, standards-based technology, and it represents a major milestone for ZeOmega’s HealthUnity platform. We’re excited to see it deliver real improvements for providers, payers, and patients alike – and to serve as a blueprint for other states pursuing similar transformation.”
