What You Should Know

  • Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach has launched “Chart with Art,” Epic’s ambient AI documentation tool, for its inpatient nursing staff.
  • The deployment makes Mount Sinai the first health system in Florida and the fourth nationwide to extend Epic’s ambient listening technology to bedside nurses.
  • The platform operates in both English and Spanish, accommodating a primary care community where over 30 percent of patients speak Spanish as their primary language.
  • Inpatient nurses can capture free-flowing bedside conversations in real time, converting dialogue into draft care plans and documentation that require clinician review and approval before entering the electronic medical record.
  • The nursing expansion builds on a multi-month physician pilot that reduced chart time per encounter by nearly 30 percent and substantially decreased after-hours documentation.

Beyond Physician Scribing: Mount Sinai Medical Center Extends Epic’s Ambient AI to Inpatient Nursing

The clinical informatics, nursing administration, and health system workflow sectors face a persistent operational challenge: EHR documentation burden.

Inpatient nurses spend a significant portion of their shifts entering structured data and narrative progress notes into computers, pulling their focus away from direct patient care.

While ambient AI scribing has scaled rapidly across outpatient physician workflows, extending ambient voice technology to inpatient nursing environments presents unique challenges due to complex shift handoffs, frequent interruptions, and multi-lingual patient populations.

To reduce keyboard dependencies and return clinical time to the bedside, Mount Sinai Medical Center has extended Epic’s ambient AI tool, “Chart with Art,” to its inpatient nursing staff. Following an initial physician rollout that reduced charting time per encounter by nearly 30 percent, Mount Sinai becomes the first health system in Florida and the fourth in the United States to deploy the technology to nursing teams.

Bilingual Speech Processing and Human-in-the-Loop Governance

Chart with Art integrates ambient listening capabilities directly into Mount Sinai’s core Epic EHR architecture:

  • Bilingual Conversational Parsing: Captures natural dialogue in both English and Spanish, translating ambient interactions into structured clinical documentation without requiring patients or families to alter how they communicate.
  • Real-Time Draft Generation: Converts free-flowing bedside conversations into draft nursing notes and care plan updates in the background.
  • Human-in-the-Loop Validation: Enforces a clinical review step where no generated text enters the permanent medical record until it is explicitly checked and confirmed by the nurse or physician.
  • Patient Opt-Out Governance: Informs patients when the tool is active and allows them to decline ambient recording at any point.

“Our nurses came into this profession to care for people. Chart with Art lets them step out from behind the keyboard and be fully present at the bedside,” stated Wendy Stuart, Chief Nursing Officer at Mount Sinai Medical Center.

By extending ambient documentation into acute inpatient nursing—where bilingual capabilities are necessary for diverse patient populations—Mount Sinai targets one of the primary drivers of nurse burnout and turnover. Furthermore, utilizing native Epic functionality rather than introducing third-party overlay apps preserves single-sign-on security, data privacy, and EHR governance.

As Mount Sinai scales Chart with Art across its inpatient units, it provides a clear operational template for how health systems can leverage EHR-native AI to streamline nursing workflows and enhance bedside care delivery.
