What You Should Know:

– Philips, a leader in health technology, today announced its next-generation AI-powered cardiovascular ultrasound platform.

– The new platform aims to revolutionize cardiac ultrasound analysis by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to improve efficiency and accuracy in echocardiography labs.

Addressing the Burden of Heart Disease:

Heart failure is a global health crisis, affecting an estimated 64 million people worldwide. This condition is associated with high mortality rates, reduced quality of life, and significant strain on healthcare systems. As the most common non-invasive method for assessing heart function, cardiovascular ultrasound plays a crucial role in early detection of heart disease. This new platform integrates seamlessly with Philips’ existing EPIQ CVx and Affiniti CVx ultrasound systems. Equipped with FDA-cleared AI applications, it aims to significantly reduce the burden on echocardiography labs and improve overall workflow efficiency.

Early Detection of Heart Wall Abnormalities:

The new Philips platform features first-of-its-kind AI algorithms, co-developed with Dr. Lang, that can detect regional wall motion abnormalities (RWMAs) with high accuracy. RWMAs are independent indicators of adverse cardiovascular events in patients with heart conditions like myocardial infarction and congenital heart disease. Automated AI assessments of RWMAs have the potential to streamline the workflow for all clinicians. These findings will be presented in detail at the upcoming American Society of Echocardiography (ASE2024) meeting.

AI Integration for Enhanced Efficiency and Accuracy:

The platform integrates proven AI applications from Philips DiA Imaging Analysis, a Philips company. These AI features are trained on anonymized real-world clinical data to improve the overall quality and consistency of cardiac imaging. Additionally, they automate image interpretation, allowing clinicians of varying experience levels to analyze ultrasound images with greater speed, efficiency, and accuracy.

Improved Patient Care and Staff Support:

Beyond AI integration, Philips offers the X11 4t mini ultrasound transducer, introduced earlier this year. This innovative transducer allows cardiologists to provide enhanced care to a wider range of patients, including pediatric patients as young as 5kg.

“By harnessing the power of AI into our echocardiography solutions, we empower clinicians with enhanced diagnostic capabilities, to ultimately improve patient care and outcomes in the management of coronary and valvular disease, while enhancing overall efficiency in cardiac practice,” said David Handler, VP and Business Leader for Global Cardiovascular Ultrasound at Philips.
