Infographic: Is Meaningful Use Really Helping or Hurting EHR Adoption?

Thought you might find this interesting

Only four hospitals and 50 professionals have achieved stage 2 meaningful use after seven months into the reporting period beginning on October 1,2013, according to a CMS official. To quality for MU stage 2:

  • eligible professionals must meet 17 core objectives and half of the six menu objectives
  • eligible hospitals must meet 16 core objectives and half of the 6 menu objectives
  • providers must also order at least 30 percent of radiology, 30 percent of labs and 60 percent of medication through CPOE
When the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) launched their EHR Incentive Programs back in January 2011, the main goal was to reward healthcare practitioners for adopting electronic health records and increasing efficiency within their practice.

With low attestations figures, hardship exceptions, and growing EHR backlash many are asking whether or not the incentives have actually encouraged EHR adoption? Eligible hospitals who do not successfully attest to MU stage 2 face lower Medicare reimbursements and significant financial penalties.

To help answer this question, NueMD has compiled research from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), CMS, and the American College of Physicians (ACP) looking to identify adoption trends and determine potential obstacles to successful MU implementation. The infographic show below illustrates these findings:
