HeartFlow and Boone Heart Institute Launch GAMEFILM Registry to Study Heart Health in Retired NFL Players

What You Should Know:

– HeartFlow, a global leader in AI-driven heart care solutions, and Boone Heart Institute, a renowned cardiovascular care provider in Denver, today announced the launch of the GAMEFILM Registry.

– GAMEFILM Registry will utilize advanced imaging and AI technology to assess and better understand coronary artery disease (CAD) risk in retired National Football League (NFL) players.

Understanding the Unique Cardiovascular Risks of Retired NFL Players

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death globally. Despite advancements in diagnostics, many heart attacks and strokes occur in individuals without prior symptoms. Early identification of high-risk individuals is critical for effective prevention and treatment. Retired NFL players often face unique cardiovascular health challenges due to the intense physical demands of their careers. The GAMEFILM Registry aims to shed light on the prevalence, risk factors, severity, and optimal treatment protocols for CAD in this population.

The GAMEFILM Registry will enroll approximately 120 former NFL players, including notable alumni like Joel Dreessen and Le-Lo Lang, who will be among the first to receive a comprehensive CAD assessment using HeartFlow’s AI-driven technology.

By leveraging coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) imaging and insights from the HeartFlow ONE platform, including its FDA-cleared FFRCT and Plaque Analysis technologies, the registry will collect valuable data to inform the development of targeted prevention and treatment strategies.

HeartFlow’s AI-Driven Solution for Cardiovascular Disease

HeartFlow’s AI-powered solutions have already helped healthcare providers diagnose and manage CAD in over 400,000 patients worldwide. The company’s technology provides clinicians with detailed information about coronary blood flow and plaque buildup, enabling more accurate risk assessments and personalized treatment plans.

“While up to one in three retired professional football players die of cardiovascular disease, much remains unknown about the prevalence of risk factors and severity of disease among these former high-performing athletes,” said Jeffrey L. Boone, M.D., Founder and Medical Director of the Boone Heart Institute. “By offering CCTA combined with HeartFlow FFRCT and Plaque Analysis, we’ll generate real-world data in the GAMEFILM Registry that will provide deeper insights into the unique cardiovascular challenges facing former professional football players, which will help us form protocols that meet their unique needs. The findings will help pave the way for actionable strategies for prevention, earlier detection, and improved care within this population.”
