Healthcare services provider Cardinal Health quietly acquired TelePharm, a Iowa City-based telepharmacy startup in July for an undisclosed amount, according to The DesMoines Register. Founded in 2012 by Roby Miller, a University of Iowa graduate, TelePharm’s cloud-based software helps pharmacies streamline workflow and communication in order to strengthen their patient relationships.
Integration Details
As part of the acquisition, all of TelePharm’s 18 employees including its founder will maintain its headquarters in Iowa City and will be wholly owned by Cardinal Health. TelePharm currently operates in 12 states and runs telepharmacies in five Iowa towns.
TelePharm Platform Overview
A telepharmacy, or remote-dispensing site, operates like a traditional pharmacy except the pharmacist reviews and verifies prescriptions from a remote location. TelePharm’s platform offers both counseling and prescription verification services. If patients have questions about their medications, or a pharmacist has required that the patient receive counseling, patients can easily speak to the remote pharmacist via a live video call.
No plans have been announced on how Cardinal Health will integrate with TelePharm, but a spokesman for Cardinal Health stated the TelePharm acquisition will complement its existing provider services
