What You Should Know
- Samsung Electronics America officially announced that its upgraded Sleep Apnea feature is now available across the United States on both the Galaxy Ring and compatible Galaxy Watch devices.
- The commercial rollout follows 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received in July 2026, alongside recent regulatory approval from South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).
- The milestone marks the world’s first FDA-cleared over-the-counter (OTC) sleep apnea risk-detection software designed specifically for a smart ring form factor.
- Operating via the Samsung Health Monitor app, the updated feature transitions from basic risk categorization to actively calculating the estimated number of breathing disruptions detected per hour of sleep.
From Binary Alerts to Hourly Disruption Quantities
Samsung initially secured FDA De Novo authorization in February 2024 for the first wearable-based detection of moderate-to-severe OSA on the Galaxy Watch series. However, that first-generation iteration served primarily as a binary notification engine, simply indicating whether retrospective physiological patterns suggested risk.
The upgraded 2026 release transitions from passive alerts to structured physiological quantification:
- Quantified Breathing Disruptions per Hour: Beyond providing a high-level risk score, the updated algorithm continuously analyzes peripheral blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) dynamics, photoplethysmography (PPG) pulse waveforms, and tri-axial accelerometer movement signals during sleep to calculate an estimated number of breathing disruptions detected per hour.
- Low-Burden Screening Protocol: The feature requires a low data-capture threshold, requiring only two nights of valid tracking data within a rolling 10-day monitoring window.
- Clinical Discussion Scaffolding: By quantifying hourly disruptions inside the Samsung Health Monitor application, the feature equips adult consumers (ages 18 and older) with structured objective trend logs that can be directly exported to primary care physicians, pulmonologists, and sleep specialists for confirmatory PSG diagnostic orders.
- Device Availability & Software Dependencies: The upgraded capability is available immediately on the newly released Galaxy Watch9 running Wear OS 7.0 or higher and the Galaxy Ring, with scheduled firmware updates slated to extend the feature to Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch8 models.
Jongmin Choi, Head of Health R&D Group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, framed the public health intent: “Samsung has long worked to make sleep health a simple and seamless part of everyday life. This approval from Korea’s MFDS, along with our introduction of the world’s first FDA cleared over-the-counter smart ring, reflects our commitment to accessible innovation. We are giving people the tools to help spot possible early signs of sleep apnea and take charge of their wellbeing.”
