What You Should Know
- Senseonics Holdings, Inc. announced the initiation of its first-in-human clinical feasibility study evaluating Freedom, an investigational continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system.
- Freedom represents an evolution of the company’s commercialized Eversense 365 platform, incorporating an integrated battery and embedded Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) transceiver to communicate directly with mobile devices.
- The system is designed to eliminate the external, on-body transmitter required by existing systems, effectively making continuous glucose monitoring invisible for up to a full year with a single inserted sensor.
- The early feasibility study will evaluate the clinical safety and functional performance of the device design, focusing on direct-from-subcutaneous Bluetooth communication fidelity in human subjects.
The Freedom Architecture
Freedom is engineered to transmit real-time interstitial glucose telemetry directly to a user’s mobile device via integrated Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), completely eliminating the need for any exterior, on-body transmitter.
The clinical challenge of eliminating an on-body transmitter from an implantable biosensor centers on two core constraints: micro-battery chemistry and RF signal attenuation through biological tissue. Historically, external transmitters served double duty—supplying inductive power to the passive subcutaneous sensor while broadcasting Bluetooth signals through open air to a smartphone.
Freedom retains the core optical, fluorescence-based glucose-sensing chemistry and one-year operational lifespan validated in Eversense 365, while integrating miniaturized active electronics directly into the sub-dermal capsule:
- Integrated Subcutaneous Micro-Battery: Packs an internal energy source engineered to continuously power the optical sensor and signal processing unit for extended durations beneath the skin.
- Direct-to-Phone Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE): Embeds an internal BLE radio and specialized antenna array directly within the capsule, allowing direct, encrypted synchronization with standard iOS and Android applications or compatible automated insulin delivery (AID) closed-loop systems.
- Zero External Adhesion: Frees patients from daily adhesive patches, skin tears, contact dermatitis, and the ongoing expense of replacement adhesives, effectively rendering continuous glucose monitoring completely invisible to outside observers.
The first-in-human trial is an early feasibility study designed to evaluate basic clinical safety, biological tissue tolerance, and device functionality—specifically real-world BLE packet delivery through human dermis and adipose layers.
The human trial follows pre-clinical animal studies completed during the second quarter of 2026, which tested multiple antenna geometries and anatomical implantation depths. Over approximately seven weeks of continuous logging and more than 18,500 communication data points, the selected antenna configuration achieved a 100% communication success rate within target operational ranges.
Dr. Tim Goodnow, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer of Senseonics, outlined the commercial thesis: “Now being tested in humans for the first time, the Freedom CGM represents our vision to eliminate the requirement for an on-body component, effectively making continuous glucose monitoring invisible. We believe this represents an extremely attractive proposition for millions of people with diabetes and we are proudly leading the race to get there. At Senseonics, we are not interested in incremental innovation. Our mission is to transform lives in the diabetes community and push the boundaries of sensing technology to improve health and wellbeing. Eversense 365 redefined what a CGM could be by becoming the world’s first and only one-year system and we are just getting started.”
Regulatory Roadmap: Pivotal Trials in 2027 Ahead of 2028 Commercial Debut
The initiation of human safety and feasibility trials establishes a definitive clinical roadmap for Senseonics as it seeks to disrupt the multi-billion-dollar diabetes hardware sector:
- Pivotal Trial Initiation (2027): Insights and telemetry data gathered from the active feasibility study will inform the protocol design for a comprehensive, multi-center pivotal clinical study that Senseonics expects to launch in 2027.
- Target Commercial Launch (2028): Pending regulatory submissions to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European notified bodies, the company is targeting a full commercial launch in 2028.
