What You Should Know
- Connected health hardware pioneer Withings and comprehensive diagnostic platform Function announced an enterprise integration, creating a bi-directional data bridge connecting continuous daily physiological telemetry with longitudinal clinical lab testing.
- The technical bridge allows Withings daily metrics—spanning body composition, segmental muscle mass, visceral fat, blood pressure, and sleep staging—to sync automatically into the Function app.
- In turn, Function’s comprehensive panel of more than 160 biomarker results populates inside the Withings app interface, providing continuous clinical context alongside daily cardiovascular and activity trends.
Merging Ambient Hardware with Longitudinal Blood Intelligence
The integration establishes a continuous feedback loop between at-home hardware telemetry and clinical-grade diagnostic assays:
- Bidirectional Data Exchange: Rather than a one-way export, data flows symmetrically across both ecosystems. Daily readings from Withings smart scales (such as the Body Scan and Body Smart lines) and blood pressure monitors (such as the BPM Vision and BPM Connect) populate Function’s Medical Intelligence Lab™ (MI Lab™) engine. Simultaneously, Function’s 160+ lab results—spanning cardiovascular markers like ApoB and Lp(a), metabolic indicators like fasting insulin and HbA1c, and hormone, thyroid, and nutrient panels—render directly in the Withings app under its “My Health Panels” view.
- Correlating Daily Signals with Underlying Pathophysiology: By placing physiological trends side by side, members can correlate how daily behavioral changes influence systemic biology over time. For example, rather than viewing elevated systolic blood pressure readings in isolation, the platform displays those trends alongside systemic inflammation markers (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein – hs-CRP) and lipid profiles, giving users actionable data to present during clinical consultations.
- Commercial Rollout & Member Access: The integration is available immediately to U.S. users, accompanied by cross-platform onboarding incentives: Withings users receive a $30 credit toward Function’s $365 annual testing membership (reducing the first-year fee to $335), while active Function members receive a 10% equipment discount across eligible Withings hardware.
The GLP-1 and Metabolic Imperative: Beyond the Static Bathroom Scale
The commercial timing of the partnership aligns with the surge in consumers managing cardiometabolic health and utilizing GLP-1 receptor agonists (such as semaglutide and tirzepatide).
While GLP-1 therapies drive significant overall weight reduction, clinical endocrinologists and obesity medicine specialists have increasingly raised concerns regarding the composition of that weight loss—specifically the risk of disproportionate lean muscle mass wasting and bone density reduction. A standard bathroom scale measures only total gravitational mass, blinding users to whether pounds lost represent visceral adipose tissue or functional skeletal muscle.
By pairing Withings’ segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)—which isolates muscle mass, visceral fat, and extracellular water—with Function’s metabolic blood panels (measuring fasting glucose, HbA1c, liver enzymes, and renal function), patients and treating physicians can monitor body recomposition and metabolic adaptation in real time. This enables clinicians to adjust protein intake, resistance training protocols, or pharmacological dosing before sarcopenia or metabolic deceleration takes hold.
“Withings has always believed that health is not a moment; it is a story told over time,” said Eric Carreel, Chairman and Co-Founder of Withings. “Function shares that conviction, and together we’re helping people see how their daily habits, measurements, and biology connect over time, turning more data into a deeper understanding of their health.”
