What You Should Know:

– ARC Innovation at Sheba Medical Center and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (part of the Mount Sinai Health System) have announced a major three-year collaboration with NVIDIA. The initiative focuses on applying Large Language Model (LLM) technology to genomic research.

– The primary objective is to pioneer the decoding of the majority (98%) of the human genome that remains poorly understood. By deciphering this area—once labeled “junk DNA”—researchers aim to unlock new pathways for disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

A Global Alliance of Science, Medicine, and Technology

The collaboration unites three global powerhouses: leading academic medical centers and a technology giant.

  • Sheba and Mount Sinai: Contribute extensive genomic datasets, AI research capabilities, and clinical insight.
  • NVIDIA: Provides its advanced computational architecture, AI development platforms, software, and scientific expertise.

Together, the institutions will create an AI-driven genomic research engine capable of identifying patterns and regulatory mechanisms that link genetic variation to disease risk and therapeutic response.

Advancing Precision Medicine and Genomic Foundation Models

The partnership seeks to advance precision medicine, making personalized whole genome sequencing a reality for all. The project involves the development of a state-of-the-art Genomic Foundation Model (gFM), utilizing NVIDIA’s full-stack AI platform. At Mount Sinai, the initiative will be anchored within the larger Mount Sinai Million Health Discoveries Program, which integrates genomics, AI, and clinical translation.

Prof. Eyal Zimlichman, Director of ARC at Sheba, noted that this collaboration “empowers a fundamental transformation in healthcare—accelerating scientific discovery, strengthening health systems, improving healthcare outcomes globally, and driving new economic value throughout the ecosystem”.
