What You Should Know:

– Datavant, a data collaboration platform, and athenahealth, Inc., a provider of network-enabled software and services announced an anticipated partnership aimed at transforming the historically manual and fragmented process of medical record requests and releases.

– By bringing together athenahealth’s market-leading EHR platform with Datavant’s expertise in health data exchange, the companies plan to build a modern, comprehensive infrastructure for data exchange.

Integrating Full-Service Release of Information (ROI)

The planned offering will integrate Datavant’s clinical data access technology and managed Release of Information (ROI) services directly into athenahealth’s cloud-based athenaOne solution. This collaboration is designed to be purpose-agnostic, covering a broad range of scenarios including requests from patients, public health agencies, life insurance companies, researchers, and other healthcare practices.

“By bringing together athenahealth’s market-leading EHR platform with Datavant’s expertise in health data exchange, we are building a modern infrastructure for data exchange that allows practices to focus on care, not paperwork, while ensuring that health data gets from where it sits to where it needs to be – securely, compliantly and without friction,” said Shannon West, Chief Strategy Officer at Datavant.

The integrated service will offer an end-to-end solution covering request intake, authorization validation, compliance review, secure delivery, and appropriate billing.

Eliminating Administrative Burden and Increasing Efficiency

The core goal of the partnership is to eliminate administrative burden and increase operational efficiency for practices. Participation will be voluntary, giving athenahealth customers the option to automate and digitize medical record requests within their existing workflow.

The benefits of this streamlined approach include:

  • Compliance Assurance: Utilization of AI-enabled quality assurance controls to decrease unauthorized disclosure risk and ensure compliant fulfillment across all requests. Datavant already processes over 3.6 million requests annually with an industry-leading compliance accuracy rate for existing customers.
  • Faster Delivery: Accelerating the delivery of medical records, resulting in a faster, more seamless experience for patients and authorized requestors.
  • Digital Tools: Leveraging enhanced capabilities such as digital intake tools with 95%+ patient and provider satisfaction scores.

“By working with Datavant, we plan to deliver a technology-driven solution that automates and simplifies this complexity—reducing administrative workload, increasing compliance, and improving satisfaction for record requestors,” said Michael Palantoni, Chief Strategy and Corporate Development Officer at athenahealth.
