Moneta Health Raises $4.5M to Expand AI-Powered Cognitive Care in Neurology Deserts

What You Should Know:

– Moneta Health, a brain health company pioneering cognitive rehabilitation therapy through AI-powered delivery secures $4.5M with investment from True Ventures and Health2047 (the American Medical Association’s venture studio).

– The investment will support the company’s mission to expand access to cognitive care, particularly in regions with insufficient access to neurology care. The funding is coupled with a new multi-year partnership with Benefis Health System in Montana.

AI-Powered Cognitive Care

Cognitive impairment affects 32% of adults over 65, impacting 250 million people globally. Despite the proven benefits of cognitive rehabilitation therapy—often referred to as “physical therapy for the brain”—fewer than 20% of patients are accessing this treatment in outpatient settings.

Moneta Health addresses this gap with a program that eliminates the need for apps or a high-speed internet connection. Patients engage with a licensed therapist by phone and perform cognitive exercises between visits with an AI-powered therapy assistant by phone.

The company has already demonstrated strong clinical outcomes:

  • Patients’ cognitive function significantly improved by 18% on average over the course of the program.
  • This result exceeds the U.S. national benchmark of 13% for traditional outpatient therapy.

Expanding Access in Underserved Regions

The partnership with Benefis Health System is crucial for expanding care in rural areas. Dr. Greg Tierney, President of System Clinical Operations at Benefis Health System, noted that Montana has the sixth oldest population in the nation. Moneta’s proven program is an accessible approach to proactive brain health for their aging demographic.

Moneta’s focus on accessibility is a key differentiator. The virtual clinic treats patients via telephone in several states, including Florida, Nevada, Washington, and West Virginia. The program is reimbursed by major payers, including Medicare, TRICARE, and a growing number of Medicare Advantage plans such as Aetna, Blue Cross, and Humana.

Expansion Plans

The recent funding will fuel product development, clinical research, and expansion into other underserved regions. As cognitive impairment and dementia rates continue to rise, Moneta aims to redefine how therapy is delivered and reimagine the treatment and prevention of cognitive decline.

“Making cognitive care more accessible is a personal mission,” said Paul A. Campbell, co-founder and CEO of Moneta Health. “My mother was diagnosed with dementia in 2017. I wish we had a platform like Moneta earlier in our family’s journey to maintain her cognitive function for longer.”
