What You Should Know:

During the Oracle Health and Life Sciences Summit, Oracle Health has announced a new AI capability for its Patient Portal that will provide patients with secure, plain-language explanations of their medical records.

– The new feature, which uses OpenAI’s technology, is designed to help patients better understand diagnoses, test results, and treatment options.

Delivering ChatGPT-Like Conversational Experiences in Oracle Health Patient Portal

The new feature builds on Oracle Health’s recently released AI-enabled electronic health record (EHR). By bringing AI into the patient portal, the company aims to provide actionable intelligence to both clinicians and patients, ultimately improving wellness.

Patients will be able to ask clarifying questions about their personal medical data directly within the portal. For example, instead of struggling with medical jargon, a user could ask, “What does this abbreviation mean?” or “What was the result of my latest cholesterol test?” The AI will provide instant, context-aware answers, empowering patients to be more proactive in managing their health.

With the new AI-powered portal, patients will be able to:

  • Explain Complex Results: The AI can break down unfamiliar values, such as “eGFR: 52” on a lab report, explaining what the measure means and why it’s monitored.
  • Simplify Medical Terminology: Complex terms like “hypertensive heart disease” can be translated into easy-to-understand language.
  • Prepare for Doctor Visits: Patients can ask pre-appointment questions, such as whether a new prescription could be affecting their glucose level.
  • Draft Messages: The AI can help patients compose clear and relevant questions to send to their care team via the portal’s secure message center.
  • Schedule Follow-up Care: The portal will offer multiple appointment options and suggestions, making it easier for patients to book a convenient time.

“With advanced conversational AI embedded across a patient’s comprehensive medical record, people can be more proactive in managing their care by asking questions and gaining a deeper understanding of their health. This level of engagement is crucial in helping to keep patients on track with their treatment plans, ultimately supporting better outcomes and a more personalized healthcare experience that builds greater patient satisfaction,” said Seema Verma, executive vice president and general manager, Oracle Health and Life Sciences.

Security and Responsible AI

The AI-powered patient portal is built on OpenAI’s frontier models, but patient privacy remains a top priority. No personal medical data is stored by OpenAI. The system also does not generate any diagnoses, medication, or treatment recommendations. Its sole focus is to simplify complex concepts and terms. To ensure transparency, all AI-generated text is highlighted with a visual bar and cites its sources.

Availability

The OpenAI powered Oracle Patient Portal is planned for general availability in calendar year 2026.
