NASA and Google Develop AI Doctor for Deep Space Missions

What You Should Know: 

– NASA is collaborating with Google to develop an innovative proof-of-concept: an AI-powered automated Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) called the “Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant” (CMO-DA). 

– The  multi-modal interface leverages artificial intelligence to potentially support human exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

The Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant: An AI Astronaut’s Companion

The primary goal of CMO-DA is to equip astronauts with the ability to autonomously diagnose and treat medical conditions when they are far from Earth and direct communication with medical experts is either delayed or impossible. Trained on a vast library of spaceflight-specific medical literature, the AI system employs cutting-edge natural language processing and machine learning techniques. This allows it to analyze crew health and performance data in real-time, providing reliable and safe recommendations. The tool is specifically designed to assist a designated crew medical officer or a remote flight surgeon in maintaining crew health and making data-driven medical decisions informed by predictive analytics.

Early Results and Future Plans

Initial trials of the CMO-DA system involved testing its capabilities across a diverse range of simulated medical scenarios. The accuracy of its outputs was evaluated using the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) framework, a standard tool for assessing the clinical skills of medical professionals. These early results have shown significant promise, indicating that the AI can provide reliable diagnoses based on reported symptoms. Google and NASA are now actively collaborating with medical doctors to further test and refine the model. This crucial step aims to enhance the system’s accuracy and ensure its robustness for autonomous crew health management during future, extended space exploration missions.
