What You Should Know:
– Blue Shield of California has announced a groundbreaking new feature that sends members mobile push notifications whenever a doctor sends an e-prescription.
– The first-of-its-kind service, powered by Gemini Health, is designed to give members immediate access to drug prices, alternative options, and potential savings right on their mobile device. The initiative builds on Blue Shield’s commitment to making healthcare more transparent and affordable.
A Digital Dashboard for Smarter Medication Choices
This new feature, called Price Check My Rx, is accessible within the Blue Shield mobile app. When a member’s doctor initiates an e-prescription, the member receives an alert. Tapping on the notification takes them to a dashboard where they can see the out-of-pocket cost for their prescription. They can also view a list of lower-cost alternatives, compare prices at different in-network pharmacies, and check for available discounts.
The same cost and alternative information is also sent to clinicians at the point of e-prescribing, which helps facilitate conversations with their patients about medication options. This dual approach ensures both providers and patients are equipped with the information needed to make informed decisions.
According to Jigar Shah, chief marketing and strategy officer at Blue Shield of California, this is a significant step toward a more transparent healthcare system. “I’m proud that we are removing the guesswork for patients when it comes to drug costs,” he said. “This is another important step toward a healthcare system that is worthy of our family and friends and sustainably affordable.”
History of Innovation and Savings
The new feature marks the latest in a series of digital enhancements Blue Shield of California has launched to improve the member experience. The health plan has previously introduced online appointment booking with Zocdoc and Virtual Blue, a plan that integrates virtual care.
The collaboration with Gemini Health is not new; it began in 2018 when the two organizations partnered to give healthcare providers instant access to lower-cost medication options. Since 2022 alone, this partnership has resulted in more than $100M in savings for Blue Shield members through informed provider decisions.
