What You Should Know:

– Cleveland Clinic announced the rollout of Ambience’s AI-powered platform for clinical documentation, CDI, and point-of-care coding across its ambulatory practices in the United States.

– Starting later this month, Cleveland Clinic clinicians will have access to AI documentation software that automatically generates comprehensive medical notes from patient encounters. These notes are then reviewed and approved by the provider before being uploaded to the patient’s medical record. The technology also creates customized after-visit summaries for patients, families, and caregivers.

Rigorous Evaluation and Phased Rollout

The decision to implement Ambience’s AI platform follows a comprehensive pilot program conducted by Cleveland Clinic throughout 2024. The technology was evaluated across more than 80 specialties and subspecialties to ensure its effectiveness and suitability for diverse clinical settings. The rollout to ambulatory providers in the U.S. will occur in phases over the next several months, allowing for a smooth transition and ongoing evaluation of the technology’s impact.

Patient-Centric Approach

Cleveland Clinic emphasizes that the AI technology will not be used to diagnose or treat any medical condition. Providers will retain full responsibility for reviewing and approving all AI-generated notes to ensure accuracy and completeness.

Patients will be informed before the AI tool is used during their visit and will have the option to opt-out if they prefer. This patient-centric approach ensures transparency and respects individual preferences.

“The promise of AI in healthcare is that it will enable us to care for patients with a higher level of safety and quality, and a better patient and caregiver experience,” said Rohit Chandra, Ph.D., Chief Digital Officer for Cleveland Clinic. “Our implementation of ambient AI technology delivers on that promise because it helps our providers fully engage with their patients, saves time, and alleviates some of their administrative burden.”
