What You Should Know:

– Promising results from a pilot program using a generative AI platform to help with clinical documentation show improvements in both patient and clinician experiences at the University of Chicago Medicine, according to survey data of patients at the academic health system.

– UChicago Medicine will expand the program to more than 800 clinicians across its health system.

Abridge: Revolutionizing Clinical Documentation Through AI-Powered Medical Conversations

Founded in 2018, Abridge is transforming healthcare by enhancing clinical documentation efficiency and enabling clinicians to focus on patient care. Purpose-built for medical conversations, Abridge supports over 28 languages and 50 specialties, offering wide applicability across clinician-patient interactions. Its enterprise-grade technology converts patient-clinician conversations into structured clinical notes in real time, integrating deeply with electronic medical records (EMRs). With Linked Evidence and auditable AI, Abridge ensures trust by mapping AI-generated summaries to verified ground truth, setting industry benchmarks for responsible AI deployment in healthcare.

Impact on Patient and Clinician Experience at UChicago Medicine
During a six-week pilot, 200 physicians at UChicago Medicine utilized Abridge’s platform to document patient conversations in real time. The pilot demonstrated significant improvements in patient experience, as measured by Press Ganey:

  • 4.4 percentage point increase in “concern shown by the provider.”
  • 3.6-point increase in satisfaction with “explanations about the patient’s problem or condition.”
  • 3.0-point increase in patients feeling “included in care decisions.”

Clinician satisfaction also improved markedly:

  • 90% of clinicians felt more valued by UChicago Medicine after Abridge’s introduction.
  • Clinicians providing undivided attention to patients increased from 49% to 90%.

Industry Recognition and Adoption
Abridge has been ranked as a top emerging technology by KLAS, achieving:

  • No. 1 for “Improving Clinician Experience.”
  • No. 3 for “Improving Patient Experience.”
  • No. 4 for “Improving Outcomes.”

KLAS rankings, determined by 49 industry experts, underscore Abridge’s leadership in healthcare innovation.

Expanding Partnerships and Ecosystem
Abridge is the platform of choice for leading healthcare systems, including Corewell Health, Riverside Health, Reid Health, UPMC, Emory Healthcare, and Yale New Haven Health. Notable collaborations include partnerships with Mayo Clinic and Epic to develop ambient AI workflows for nurses, as well as alliances with Wolters Kluwer and OpenNotes to enhance the platform’s ecosystem.

Abridge recently announced $150M in Series C financing, supported by a strategic investment from NVIDIA, further cementing its position as a leader in generative AI for healthcare.
