What You Should Know:

– Pelago, a digital clinic partner for substance use management, released its 2024 Annual State of Substance Use Management Trend Report.

– The report underscores the critical role employers play in addressing the widespread issue of substance use in the American workforce.

Employers Urged to Support Substance Use Management

The survey of 1,210 U.S. workers revealed a significant gap in employer support for substance use management. While over half of respondents recognize the importance of such support, only 14% reported having access to these resources. The report also highlights the substantial personal and professional impact of substance use, with 35% of workers reporting related problems and 42% missing work due to these issues.

Key findings from the report include:

  • High prevalence of substance use: 35% of American workers report personal or family struggles with substance or alcohol use.
  • Significant impact on productivity: 42% of employees have missed work due to substance use-related issues.
  • Stigma as a barrier: Over half of employees feel uncomfortable seeking help due to shame or humiliation.
  • Disproportionate impact: Women, younger workers, and LGBTQ+ employees are at higher risk for substance use and mental health challenges.

Pelago emphasizes the need for employers to create “recovery-ready workplaces” that provide support, reduce stigma, and offer evidence-based treatment options. By implementing such programs, employers can improve employee well-being, boost productivity, and mitigate the financial impact of substance use disorders.
