What You Should Know:

– eClinicalWorks, a leading provider of cloud-based electronic health records (EHR) for ambulatory care, has released the results of a recent survey examining healthcare professionals’ perceptions of artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare industry.

– The survey aimed to understand how AI-powered solutions can help address critical challenges like physician burnout, patient data management, and clinical documentation.

Burnout Relief Through Technology

The survey reveals a significant administrative burden on healthcare providers, with 41% reporting spending over four hours daily on tasks like documentation. This data aligns with concerns about physician burnout, a major challenge in the healthcare industry. However, the findings hold positive news: 65% of respondents believe AI can best support them with clinical documentation.

AI Medical Scribes: A Time-Saving Solution

The survey delves deeper, exploring the potential time savings offered by AI medical scribes. Notably, 51% of respondents believe AI can save them two or more hours per day on documentation, freeing up valuable time for patient interaction and other critical tasks.

Tackling Data Management with AI

Beyond documentation, the survey highlights the challenges of managing patient data. A staggering 68% of respondents identified the volume and analysis of faxes as the biggest difficulty with their fax inbox. This points to an industry still struggling with paper-based communication. However, the survey finds promise in AI, with 85% of providers emphasizing the importance of gathering records from other healthcare organizations – a step facilitated by AI-powered solutions.

Optimizing Appointments with AI

Reduced schedule utilization due to no-shows is another major concern for healthcare practices. The survey reveals that 64% of respondents experience more than 10 no-shows per week, highlighting the need for innovative solutions. Here again, AI offers promise, with eClinicalWorks promoting its AI-powered no-show prediction model as a means to improve appointment utilization.

Investing in AI for Better Patient Care

The survey results suggest a clear need for investment in AI-powered healthcare technology. By streamlining documentation, optimizing workflows, and reducing no-shows, AI can help healthcare professionals deliver exceptional patient care while improving operational efficiency. eClinicalWorks emphasizes its own AI solutions, including the Sunoh.ai medical scribe and the healow no-show prediction model, as examples of technology addressing these needs.

Methodology

The online survey was conducted during two eClinicalWorks company summits held in 2024. Over 120 healthcare professionals participated. The survey aimed to gather data on key challenges faced by healthcare professionals and explore AI-powered solutions that can help overcome them.

“Healthcare professionals face many challenges daily that hinder their ability to provide the best possible care to their patients while mitigating burnout. Specifically, 41% of the respondents noted spending over four hours daily on administrative tasks, including documentation,” said Girish Navani, chief executive officer and cofounder of eClinicalWorks. “We conducted this survey in hopes of shedding light on these issues and gathering feedback on how our providers foresee AI solutions helping them surpass these challenges and improve patient outcomes. It is evident from this survey that healthcare professionals agree – innovative technology and AI solutions have the power to transform healthcare delivery.”
