Epic’s sixth campus will include Underhill, an underground cafeteria with doors and windows built into a hill. It’s a nod to J. R. R. Tolkien’s hobbits, whose “love of food and first and second lunches made them a natural selection for the other worlds to visit at mealtimes.”CUNINGHAM

What You Should Know:

– Verona, Wisconsin-based EHR leader Epic Systems has begun construction on its sixth campus, aptly named “Other Worlds,” The Cap Times first reports.

– Following approval this month from the city’s Plan Commission, the whimsical addition continues the company’s tradition of drawing inspiration from fantasy literature for its office designs.

Inspired by Narnia and Lord of the Rings

Other Worlds will take cues from beloved fantasy works like “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “The Lord of the Rings.” The first three buildings in development include:

  • Elvendell: Evoking the elven city with carvings, masonry, and blacksmithing references.
  • Azland: A nod to C.S. Lewis’ Narnia, with a “giant wardrobe” entrance.
  • Floating Forest: A glass structure adorned with trees, resembling an alien landscape.

An underground cafeteria named “Underhill” pays homage to J.R.R. Tolkien’s hobbits, while the parking structure is called “Black Hole.”

Fueling Growth with Innovation

Epic’s expansion reflects the company’s remarkable growth. Since its founding in 1979, it has grown to over 13,000 employees, with 12,500 based in Verona. This surge is driven by the widespread adoption of their software, currently managing health records for 305 million patients. Construction is still underway on Epic’s fourth and fifth campuses, where new buildings are set to open later this year. Sci-Fi, part of the Storybook campus, is expected to open in June. Guilds and Creatures, both part of the Wizards Academy campus, are slated to open in fall.  Epic expects the first of the buildings will be occupied in early 2026.

A Look Inside Epic’s Enchanting World

Epic welcomes visitors for self-guided tours, offering a glimpse into their whimsical work environment. With six campuses planned, each drawing inspiration from fantasy worlds, Epic’s headquarters is sure to remain a fascinating destination.
