Hawaii Pacific Health

Hawai‘i Pacific Health, one of the largest healthcare providers in Hawaii, has been named a 2016 HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award recipient. Hawaii Pacific Health is only the second two-time winner of the Davies Enterprise Award of Excellence since the program’s inception.

Since 1994, the HIMSS Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence has recognized outstanding achievement of organizations that have utilized health information technology (IT) to substantially improve patient outcomes while achieving a return on investment.

Hawaii Pacific Health (HPH) is committed to providing the highest quality medical care and service to the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Region.  The nonprofit healthcare network operates four medical centers and 70 outpatient clinics and service sites across Hawaii. In addition, the health system has leading strategic initiatives in women’s health, pediatric care, cardiovascular services, cancer care and bone and joint services.

Recent Case Studies

HPH submitted three case studies demonstrating how  the system has leveraged health IT to improve patient and business outcomes.

– Through the implementation of computer-directed insulin dosing system, the development of EHR order sets for insulin dosing, and wireless glucometer integration, HPH significantly reduced length of stay for diabetic patients.

– By developing a series of order sets and alerts using the best practices algorithms, HPH reduced length of stay (LOS) for all sepsis patients by almost 2 full days and saved 275 lives over two years.

– HPH created a data warehouse, integrated ancillary technology to its EHR, and utilized EHR functionality to drive metrics, engage patients, and improved population health management to significantly improve ambulatory patient outcomes and generate an additional $6 million in revenue.

“As a two-time Davies Award winner, HPH clearly exemplifies how collaborative teamwork, effective planning and use of health IT, and modified clinical process changes when warranted, can result in sustainable improvements in patient outcomes.  And that is truly the hallmark of the Davies Award,” said Janis Curtis, Associate Director of Clinical Data Research Networks (CDRNs) in the Office of Research Informatics at Duke Health and chair of the HIMSS Davies Enterprise Award Committee. “The Davies Committee and HIMSS congratulate the team members of Hawaii Pacific Health on receiving their second Davies Award and improving the health outcomes of Hawaiians.”

Davies Award Background

HIMSS Enterprise Davies Award Recipient

Davies Awards represent the highest level of achievement for electronic medical records excellence that HIMSS offers. The award is open only to organizations that have achieved HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 or Stage 7 designation for advanced electronic medical records. MU Health Care achieved Stage 7 designation in November 2013 for its transition from paper to electronic patient records in outpatient clinics. The Davies Awards program promotes EHR-enabled improvement in patient outcomes through sharing case studies and lessons learned on implementation strategies, workflow design, best practice adherence, and patient engagement.
