Ten mobile health-related startup teams from across the country and Australia have arrived in Kansas City to build and strengthen their businesses in the inaugural Sprint Mobile Health Accelerator powered by Techstars. The three-month intensive mentor-driven program, located in Kansas City’s Crossroads District, officially kicks off this week.

Sprint  has partnered with Techstars to bring the world-class accelerator program to Kansas City as part of its ongoing activities to help grow the region’s already vibrant startup community.

The Sprint Mobile Health Accelerator powered by Techstars will provide entrepreneurs in this field an amazing advantage to hone their business strategies and structure and be mentored by leading technology experts from Sprint, regional health care leaders and successful entrepreneurs from around the country.  Each startup receives up to $120,000 in funding. The program culminates in June when the 10 companies will pitch to an audience of investors and business leaders from around the U.S. and the Kansas City community.

“The quality of the companies in our Sprint Accelerator program is outstanding,” said Kevin McGinnis, vice president-Pinsight Media+, a division of Sprint, who has taken a leadership role in expanding and strengthening the company’s work with startups. “Sprint is proud to be part of the innovation movement in the healthcare space. The impact these companies can have on so many people in both the technology and healthcare industries is tremendous. On behalf of Sprint, the life sciences and entrepreneurial communities in the region, I welcome the teams!”

Teams participating in the Sprint Mobile Health Accelerator powered by Techstars are developing solutions that encompass hardware, software platforms, transformative services, big data and mobile applications. The teams are:

  • Akibah (The Glucometer of the Future)  – AkibaH eliminates the need for users to carry bulky glucometers by building one into their smartphone case. The name comes from a Swahili proverb that means, ‘a person with foresight will always know prosperity.
  • Fitbark (Dog Activity Monitor) – FitBark is a tiny, smart activity monitor that helps you understand your dog’s health and behavior in a way that was never available before.
  • Lifeline Response (Next Generation Personal Safety) – the first and only Patent Protected personal safety mobile app to utilize natural human reaction to respond to emergency situations by immediately alerting authorities if the user is in need of help. Take control of your safety with LifeLine Response™.
  • Medicast (House Call Doctors on Demand) – Medicast connects patients with doctors on-demand to deliver convenient and compassionate care in the home, office or hotel, with the click of a button.
  • Ollo Mobile (Connecting Smarter Families) – More than a just phone, CloudPhone 3G is a cloud based smart care system that constantly monitors your loved one’s health and wellbeing.
  • Prime (Instantly get your health records from any doctor) – Prime offers a mobile app that lets you instantly and automatically get your health records from any doctor. Easily access your personal health info anywhere you go, and share (privately inside Prime) important health updates with those who need them.
  • Sickweather (Online Social Health Network) – Just as Doppler radar scans the skies for indicators of bad weather, Sickweather scans social networks for indicators of illness, allowing you to check for the chance of sickness as easily as you can check for the chance of rain.
  • Symptom.ly (A Better Way to Better Health) – Symptom.ly is a clinically validated symptom tracking platform for insurers, doctors, and patients, to reduce the costs of chronic illness.
  • Tenacity Health (Better Incentives for Corporate Wellness Programs) – Tenacity Health is revolutionizing corporate well-being by developing a platform for sustained behavior change in employees. Tenacity helps companies reduce healthcare costs while motivating employees to lead healthier, happier lives. Tenacity came from MIT research on social learning and the spread of behavior in networks.
