How Amazon Pharmacy’s Same-Day GLP-1 Delivery is Bypassing the Corner Drugstore
For the past three years, the historic boom in GLP-1 weight-loss medications has been plagued by two massive bottlenecks: infuriating supply chain shortages and an incredibly opaque pricing system at the pharmacy counter. Patients routinely leave their doctor’s office with a prescription, only to spend days calling local pharmacies to find it in stock, and then face unexpected $1,000 out-of-pocket bills at the register.
Today, Amazon Pharmacy and Eli Lilly announced a partnership designed to aggressively eliminate both of those bottlenecks. Amazon is now dispensing Eli Lilly’s newly approved oral GLP-1, Foundayo™, utilizing a combination of radical price transparency and massive logistical scale. By automatically applying manufacturer coupons directly at checkout, Amazon is guaranteeing a price of $25 a month for insured patients and a highly disruptive $149 a month for cash-pay patients.
“Amazon Pharmacy is reducing barriers for customers to access new weight management treatments like Foundayo,” said Tanvi Patel, Vice President and General Manager of Amazon Pharmacy. “We are giving customers faster treatment options with our Same-Day Delivery offering… and the price transparency they need to make informed decisions about their care.”
Dispensing Kiosks
In a major blow to traditional brick-and-mortar pharmacies, Amazon is introducing pharmacist-supported dispensing kiosks inside select One Medical clinics. Patients can now literally walk out of their doctor’s appointment with the medication in hand.
The launch acts as a flywheel for Amazon’s broader healthcare ambitions. Patients can receive personalized clinical evaluations and GLP-1 prescriptions via Amazon One Medical, and then immediately have them fulfilled by Amazon Pharmacy.
Customers nationwide receive free, fast delivery on their first order of each new medication. Visit pharmacy.amazon.com or choose Amazon Pharmacy in the Amazon app to get started.
