Former FDA Chief Counsel Joins Plan A™ to Launch Male Birth Control
Peter Barton Hutt

What You Should Know:

– NEXT Life Sciences, a modern reproductive healthcare company, has announced that Peter Barton Hutt, a renowned FDA regulatory expert, has joined its advisory board. Known as the “Father of Modern Drug Law,” Hutt served as Chief Counsel at the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and helped shape many of the policies that still govern medical devices today. His appointment strengthens an advisory board already composed of groundbreaking experts in male contraception.

– Hutt’s appointment comes at a critical time as NEXT Life Sciences continues along its clinical pathway for Plan A™, a first-of-its-kind male contraceptive. The product has already completed two trials with 100% success rates in Canada and Australia and is heading toward potential FDA approval.

Legacy of Shaping Modern Healthcare Policy

During his time at the FDA, Hutt is credited with creating the foundational structures of modern healthcare, including medical device legislative policy, the Over-the-Counter (OTC) drug review, and the food nutrition label. He also helped establish the use of FDA Guidance to create informal policy and key safety requirements for medical devices.

Hutt remains the only lawyer from private practice to be elected to the National Academy of Medicine and is a partner at the legal firm Covington & Burling LLP. He is also a long-time lecturer on food and drug law at Harvard Law School.

New Option for Male Contraception

Plan A™ uses a proprietary hydrogel called Vasalgel®, which is designed to filter sperm from the vas deferens while still allowing fluids to pass. The product is intended to last for more than 10 years and can be delivered quickly in a medical office and reversed on demand just as easily.

According to Darlene Walley, PhD, CEO and co-founder of NEXT Life Sciences, Hutt’s experience is helping to establish a course of action for Plan A™ to come to market as early as 2027. Hutt noted that while many groups have tried to create viable male birth control options for decades, the progress of Plan A™ is “quite encouraging”. He added that a male contraceptive “will make a sizable impact on humankind”.
