Nuance powers clinical documentation & speech recognition for seamless mobile EHR Integration after announcing recent partnerships with Cerner and Epic

Nuance Communications, Inc. has been busy lately. Earlier this month we spoke to Carina Edwards about its ambitions to revolutionize ICD-10 transition. Now, the technology developer is at it again, only this time it’s tapping into the mobile market, taking its voice-enabled technologies to go.

The company recently announced its plans to collaborate with both Cerner and Epic to incorporate its cloud-based voice recognition software into each company’s mobile EHR solutions available for smart phones and tablets. After refining such offerings for the desktop, this was the natural next step for Nuance, according to Jonathan Dreyer

“The healthcare industry is becoming more mobile. We’re simply expanding our footprint into that space,” said Dreyer, director of mobile solutions marketing at Nuance. “We’re excited to have the opportunity to provide their large install base with the option to take the same speech recognition experience they have on the desktop and bring it into the mobile EHR environment.”

Nuance’s 360 Speech Anywhere Services and 360 Development Platform will be available for Cerner’s Power TouchChart and Epic’s Haiku for the iPhone and Canto for the iPad. The voice recognition integrated solutions will allow clinicians to capture notes, navigate applications, and search for information, all by simply using their voice.

It’s an advantage that makes these on-the-go solutions even more suitable to fit the needs of today’s busy physicians like Dr. Jeffery Westcott of the Swedish Medical Center. “Using voice recognition to document a note in Haiku or Canto allows me to seamlessly dictate the patient narrative into the electronic healthcare record using a workflow that suits my style and ensures my focus can remain on patients,” he said.

Nuance’s new-found mobility doesn’t end there. It also announced that its clinical language understanding (CLU) technology is now available in the cloud. The technology has the ability to extract key facts (like medications, allergies, or vitals) from a dictated or free-text patient note. “Such facts are crucial to capture as it relates enabling healthcare provider organizations to meet government requirements such as Meaningful Use,” concluded Dreyer.
