What You Should Know:

– Avel eCare, a provider of telemedicine services, today announced the acquisition of Hospital Pharmacy Management, Inc. (HPM), a company specializing in remote medication order review and onsite pharmacy management for hospitals and health systems.

– The strategic acquisition significantly expands Avel eCare’s telepharmacy capabilities and strengthens its commitment to supporting healthcare providers, particularly in addressing the growing shortage of pharmacists.

HPM Background

HPM, based in Kansas, has been serving hospitals across Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, and Texas since 1993. They provide a unique blend of onsite and remote pharmacy services, including medication order review, verification, and entry, along with comprehensive clinical pharmacy support. This acquisition allows Avel eCare to leverage HPM’s expertise and established network to further enhance its existing telepharmacy offerings.

Acquisition Addresses the Pharmacist Shortage

The acquisition comes at a critical time when hospitals and health systems are grappling with a significant shortage of pharmacists. This shortage often leads to increased workloads, burnout, and potential risks to patient safety. By combining forces with HPM, Avel eCare is well-positioned to help healthcare facilities mitigate these challenges.

Enhanced Telepharmacy Services

The expanded Avel Pharmacy team will offer hospitals and health systems:

  • 24/7 access to a team of licensed, hospital-trained pharmacists: Ensuring timely medication order processing and review, even during off-peak hours.
  • Reduced pharmacist burnout: Alleviating workload pressures on onsite pharmacy staff.
  • Improved medication safety: Minimizing the risk of adverse drug events through expert order verification and clinical pharmacy services.
  • Enhanced efficiency: Streamlining medication management processes and optimizing pharmacy operations.

“We recognize the critical role that pharmacies play in health systems. This deal will enable us to expand our telepharmacy support and management services at a time when health systems are struggling with staffing shortages among other challenges,” said Doug Duskin, CEO of Avel eCare.
