In 2008, Donald Berwick and colleagues outlined a new framework for the delivery of healthcare, the Triple Aim. The Triple Aim’s framework served as a guide to the transition from service-based to value-based care and population health management.
This framework is centered about three goals:
1. Improving the individual experience of care
2. Improve the health of populations
3. Reducing the per capita cost of healthcare
Today, health systems are struggling with these challenges of improving the health of patient populations through value based care while lowering healthcare costs. The successful achievement of the Triple Aim requires highly effective healthcare organizations. As a result, the foundation of any effective healthcare system is an engaged and productive workforce.
However, the Triple Aim fails short at acknowledging the critical role of the workforce in healthcare transformation. It does not take into account the relevance of physicians, nurses and all employees As a result, the ‘Quadruple Aim’ was born with the aim of improving the experience of providing care.
