
Study examines the new crop of emerging job titles for healthcare executives due to the evolution in healthcare delivery and payment models.
According to a recent study by Spencer Stuart and the American Hospital Association, the evolution in healthcare delivery and payment models is impacting the leadership, talent and organizational structures of hospitals and care systems. The findings have been drawn from a survey of senior hospital and care system executives and additional interviews with more than two dozen leaders in the field. Traditional hospital roles are changing and becoming more strategic and larger in scope, to respond to the changing demands of the field. As a result, CMOs, CNOs, CFOs and COOs are being asked to develop a broader set of leadership and technical skills and increase their understanding of health care delivery beyond the hospital setting.
Key findings from the report revealed 9 emerging job titles for healthcare executives:
1. Chief Population Health Manager- Responsible for directing and conducting managed care at contracted facilities KSA wide. This position typically reports to the CEO and is directly responsible for the overall strategic direction and coordination of all care management, population health, outcome components of contracted facilities (MDFs). The CPHO secures optimal reimbursement and protects the interests of the organization in contractual negotiations, and the implementation and management of managed care relationships.
2. VP of Cost Containment– The VP of Cost Containment is responsible for all operational areas including: IT, claims, clinical functions (Utilization Review and Case Management), bill review, network management, and finance. The role will be an important and highly visible role, both internally and externally to the healthcare organization.
3. Chief Clinical Transformation Officer– The chief of transformation tends to report to the CEO of the health system. He or she acts as the administrative leader across the broad array of transformation initiatives, but often shares joint responsibility for clinical transformation with a high-profile physician leader.
4. Chief Experience Officer/Patient Engagement Officer – This resource is responsible for the overall user experience (UX) of an organization. This executive is ultimately responsible for the strategy behind and user interface design of the organization’s products and services, and may further oversee marketing communications, community relations, internal relations, HR relations, investor relations, and other interactions between the organization and its various audiences. Overall, the CXO is “responsible for making sure every aspect of a complex delivery system consistently meets basic patient and human needs” and what it calls “operationalizing the patient experience mission
5. Head of Technology Innovation – The Head of Technology Innovation will lead a team with responsibility for both operational and strategic technology leadership in the areas of teaching and learning, business operation and information access.
6. Chief Medical Informatics Officer – A Chief Medical Information Officer, or CMIO, essentially serves as the bridge between medical and IT departments at a health care organization. This person may also be referred to as the director of medical informatics or health informatics.
7. VP of Clinical Transformation – The VP of Clinical Transformation will help with our efforts to better understand the cause of patient outliers and assist with effort to reduce the number of outliers through improvements in care. This healthcare executive helps oversee all health system-wide value improvement activities and efforts including developing and implementing the population health plan, prioritizing the tactics and providing the leadership to ensure implementation of the plan. The executive will report to the Chief Clinical Transformation Officer and work in close cooperation and collaboration with Vice Presidents and Directors across the system.
8. VP of Medical Management – The VP of Medical Management executive will coordinate the medical management, quality improvement and credentialing functions for the assigned health plan based on, and in support of the company’s strategic plan; establishing the strategic vision and attendant policies and procedures.
9. VP of Clinical Informatics – The Vice President of Clinical Informatics will develop plans and strategies for assuring physician and all healthcare providers’ acceptance and ongoing use of the EMR. This executive will supervise a staff responsible for order set design; Clinical Decision Support, EMR training and Clinical Documentation Improvement. The executive will also work closely with the entity Clinical Informaticists. The role demands multiple skill domains including clinical operations, education, consulting, leadership, technology expertise, performance improvement, patient safety and administration.
