Data Design Challenge offers $100k to startups using big data to enable data driven decisions for diabetes.

25.8 million Americans have diabetes with 79 million diagnosed as pre-diabetic according to the CDC. That’s 1 in every 4 Americans. To solve a problem this huge, a new level of disruptive innovation driven is needed using big data and design to change the lives of millions who live with diabetes.

5 Innovative Startups Using Big Data to Tackle Diabetes

To spark this new level of innovation, the Data Design Diabetes Innovation Challenge created by US drug maker, Sanofi asks entrepreneurs to submit innovative ideas on how to use open data sets to improve diabetes care in the US, in alignment with the government initiative to liberate big data to advance health.

The 5 finalist teams selected last week will participate in a mentorship phase and bootcamp to improve their solutions before presenting at Health Datapalooza IV on June 3rd.

One team from the set of finalists will win $100,000 for their innovative concept that uses big data to create novel insights or produces data that can be used for decision-making to help improve health outcomes for people with diabetes in the US.

The 5 finalists for this year’s Data Design Diabetes Innovation Challenge are:

1. AllazoEngine

Allazo Health is a healthcare analytics company that solves the problem of medication non-adherence for people with diabetes. The AllazoEngine leverages existing member data to both anticipate which patients will not take their medications and to predict the most effective interventions to influence each of those patients to take their medication.

2. Connect & Coach™

Connect & Coach™ enables cost effective regular interaction between Registered Dietitians (RD) and Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE), and their clients. Designed for the retail supermarket or pharmacy setting, Connect & Coach™ is the first hybrid clinical & consumer application for RD’s & CDE’s to perform Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) services in the community where it’s needed.

3. GoCap – Insulin Dose Tracking Pen Cap

The GoCap is a replacement pen cap for prefilled insulin pens that can read dose amounts and times, and communicate wirelessly via Bluetooth to a mobile phone or connected glucometer. The information can be used for personal learning moments, high-level trend analysis, and population-level analyses that may benefit healthcare at the organizational level.

4. MediSapien Diabetic Clinical Data Repository

MediSapien, an enterprise-class web-based platform, accepts isolated silos of unstructured data including dictation, transcribed text, legacy data, and semi-structured EHR text, and converts it into fully-coded structured data. MediSapien empowers healthcare analytics for case management, pharmaceutical studies, biosurveillance, trend analysis, and academic research and is highly customizable for diabetes management.

5. Nuduro

Just as Pandora chooses songs for customers based on their learned musical tastes, Nuduro will provide home and on-the-go meal recommendations that match customers’ taste and lifestyle with their unique nutritional needs, allowing them to improve their health without sacrificing their personal relationship with food.
