ThinkSono Receives FDA 510(k) Clearance for First AI-Powered DVT Ultrasound Software

  • Medical AI developer ThinkSono has secured FDA 510(k) clearance for ThinkSono Guidance, the first AI-powered ultrasound guidance software cleared in the U.S. for evaluating suspected lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
  • Operating via a mobile app connected to compatible Clarius handheld point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) scanners, the system enables non-ultrasound-trained healthcare staff to capture clinical-grade vascular compression cine-loops after 60 to 90 minutes of standardized training.
  • In a 1,691-patient double-blinded multicenter study across 24 international and U.S. sites, non-expert operators achieved adequate diagnostic image quality in 87.1% of cases with 92.9% sensitivity and 97.1% specificity.
  • Operating as an acquisition-only tool, the software guides probe positioning and automatically transmits recorded cine-loops to a cloud dashboard, where qualified remote clinicians grade image quality and assess vein compressibility.
  • The platform addresses diagnostic delays in emergency and rural settings by reducing median scan times to 5 minutes 24 seconds and remote review times to 2 minutes 13 seconds.

Real-Time Spatial Positioning and Asynchronous Remote Triage

Following its FDA Breakthrough Device Designation earlier in 2026, the software becomes the first AI-driven guidance platform cleared in the U.S. to help non-ultrasound-trained clinicians capture diagnostic vascular scans for remote physician interpretation.

ThinkSono Guidance decouples image acquisition from expert interpretation, converting point-of-care handheld devices into connected enterprise diagnostic nodes:

  • Real-Time Computer Vision Guidance: The mobile software pairs with FDA-cleared Clarius handheld POCUS transducers, using AI algorithms to direct bedside operators through proper probe positioning, pressure application, and anatomical alignment along the proximal deep venous system.
  • Standardized Cine-Loop Recording: Automated triggers capture standardized venous compression cine-loops, ensuring consistent, audit-ready imaging of critical anatomical sites.
  • Asynchronous Dashboard Transmission: Recorded cine-loops automatically sync to the ThinkSono Guidance Dashboard, allowing off-site radiologists or vascular specialists to evaluate image quality and confirm vein compressibility within minutes.
  • Clear Regulatory Separation: The software assists exclusively with image acquisition—it does not provide diagnostic scoring or AI interpretation, keeping diagnostic authority fully in the hands of qualified physicians.

“DVT is common, dangerous, and treatable, yet whether a patient gets scanned quickly still depends on where and when they happen to present,” stated Fouad Al-Noor, CEO and Co-Founder of ThinkSono. “This clearance means a nurse or clinician at the bedside, guided by our software, can capture the images a specialist needs, and a qualified clinician can review them remotely within minutes.”
