What You Should Know

  • Hospital intelligence leader Bluesight has partnered with Pfizer Global Hospital & Biosimilars to integrate Pfizer’s SmartDose™ RFID-enabled medications into the KitCheck inventory management platform.
  • The partnership shifts RFID tagging upstream to the point of manufacture, allowing hospital pharmacies to procure pre-tagged, pre-encoded, and pre-associated medications right out of the box.
  • SmartDose™ marks an industry first by utilizing automated readback verification for every individual vial during production to ensure encoding accuracy and tag integrity before release.
  • Developed using global data standards—including GS1 encoding strategies and ARC Spec S performance benchmarks—the standardized approach is designed for complete downstream interoperability across pharmacy workflows.
  • The source-tagged Pfizer SmartDose™ portfolio is projected to be commercially available for hospital purchase in the second half of 2026.

Upstream Quality Control and Interoperability

The collaboration between Bluesight’s engineering teams and Pfizer focuses on rigorous manufacturing quality assurance to guarantee reliable scanning performance within busy central pharmacies and surgical suites:

  • Automated Individual Readback Verification: Unlike localized tagging, every SmartDose™ vial undergoes individual automated readback verification on the production line to confirm tag readability and data encoding integrity before distribution.
  • Strict Adherence to Standards: SmartDose™ tags follow GS1 global data standards and ARC Spec S performance benchmarks, embedding the National Drug Code (NDC), lot number, serial number, and expiration date directly into the label.
  • Seamless KitCheck Integration: When SmartDose™ inventory arrives at a health system, KitCheck scanning stations automatically read the pre-encoded tags in bulk without requiring manual setup, updating central inventory databases instantly.

“At Pfizer, we looked at the workflow hospitals were performing and asked a simple question: Why should pharmacists and pharmacy technicians be doing work that can be completed at the point of manufacture?” stated Erin Pezant, Global Business Excellence Lead at Pfizer Global Hospital & Biosimilars. “SmartDose was designed to remove unnecessary manual steps from the pharmacy… Hospitals receive the benefits of RFID while reducing their own tagging operations.”
