Suki Integrates Ambient AI Solution with MEDITECH’s Expanse EHR

What You Should Know

  • MEDITECH has expanded its Depression and Suicide Prevention Toolkit within the Expanse EHR platform, embedding gold-standard clinical workflows to mitigate suicide risk across inpatient, ambulatory, and emergency departments.
  • MEDITECH collaborated with the non-profit SPiER to secure copyrights and directly integrate validated, evidence-based tools into point-of-care clinical workflows.
  • The toolkit leverages embedded surveillance tools to push real-time notifications to care teams for monitoring at-risk patients, paired with patient registries and automated call-back reminders to eliminate gaps during discharge transitions.
  • The initiative directly supports federal and state mental health mandates—including behavioral health programs funded via the Rural Health Transformation Program across ~38 states—and aligns with The Joint Commission, the Suicide Prevention Resource Center’s Zero Suicide Toolkit, and the CMS Quality Payment Program.

Embedded Clinical Decision Support & Active Surveillance

The architecture driving MEDITECH’s expanded toolkit moves far beyond static documentation templates. By embedding clinical decision support (CDS) directly into Expanse, the platform actively guides care teams through screening, real-time intervention, and post-discharge tracking:

  • Real-Time Risk Screening: Integrates validated tools like the Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) and Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) to flag at-risk individuals immediately upon entry into ED, inpatient, or ambulatory environments.
  • Active Care Monitoring: Embedded surveillance engines continuously monitor patient records, pushing real-time notifications out to the clinical care team to track high-risk individuals while in the facility.
  • Interactive Safety Planning: Clinicians can co-create the Stanley-Brown Patient Safety Plan within the EHR, giving patients a practical tool to identify personal warning signs, coping mechanisms, and emergency contacts before leaving the care setting.
  • Structured Treatment Referrals: Leverages patient registries and automated call-back reminders to ensure seamless referrals for evidence-based care using the CAMS Framework®, which is clinically proven to resolve suicidal ideation in as few as six sessions.

“MEDITECH has been a leader in bridging the gap between electronic health records and suicide prevention. These latest additions to the platform not only support frontline users but save lives,” stated Virna Little, CEO and Co-Founder of SPiER.

Gregory K. Brown, PhD, co-developer of the Stanley-Brown Safety Planning Intervention, emphasized the critical timing: “By helping patients identify their personal warning signs, coping strategies, supportive contacts, and emergency resources before a crisis peaks, clinicians can give them a practical, step-by-step tool to stay safe in the moments when it matters most.”

Strategic Alignment: Meeting State & Federal Behavioral Health Mandates

MEDITECH’s integration arrives as state and federal governing bodies sharpen their focus on behavioral health access. Approximately 38 states have prioritized behavioral health and substance abuse initiatives through funding provided by the Rural Health Transformation Program. Furthermore, the embedded frameworks align directly with key quality and safety standards, including The Joint Commission, the Suicide Prevention Resource Center’s (SPRC) Zero Suicide Toolkit, and the CMS Quality Payment Program.

“By collaborating with SPiER to integrate this content, we enable our customers to deliver equitable, stigma-free care across all departments, using a framework that has been shown to reduce suicide deaths by as much as 60-80 percent,” added Janet Desroche, Associate Vice President at MEDITECH. “With embedded tools and active tracking registries, we are empowering health systems to eliminate gaps in care transitions and ensure every at-risk patient is consistently seen, heard, and protected.”
