What You Should Know
- The Launch: Walgreens has officially launched Walgreens Weight Management, expanding its Virtual Healthcare platform to offer personalized, clinician-guided weight loss support for eligible adults ages 18-64.
- The Clinical Pathway: Eligible patients complete an online video visit with a licensed doctor or nurse practitioner who evaluates their medical history and goals. Providers can then prescribe FDA-approved GLP-1 medications (like Wegovy) for weight loss.
- The Pricing Disruption: Unlike many telehealth competitors that require expensive monthly subscriptions, Walgreens is charging a flat $49 per visit.
- The Pharmacy Integration: Through the expanded Rx Savings Finder tool, Walgreens is offering a heavily reduced price for Wegovy starting at $149 per month for the 1.5 mg or 4 mg tablets, and $199 per month for the 0.25 mg and 0.5 mg injectables.
- The Market Gap: The service is explicitly designed as a more affordable, self-pay alternative for patients whose employers do not cover GLP-1s—a group that currently makes up over 75% of the workforce, according to recent KFF data.
Bypassing the Employer Coverage Gap
As demand for GLP-1 medications like Wegovy has skyrocketed, health insurance sponsors have balked at the astronomical costs. According to a 2025 survey by KFF, less than 1 in 4 employers currently cover GLP-1s when used primarily for weight management. This has created a massive demographic of stranded, highly motivated patients who want these medications but are forced into the self-pay market.
Walgreens is aggressively targeting this exact gap. By integrating its clinical services with its internal Rx Savings Finder tool (powered by RxSense), the company is attacking the cost barrier from both sides. Not only is the prescriber visit capped at $49, but the medication itself is heavily discounted. The newly launched Wegovy tablets are available starting at $149 per month, while the injectables start at $199 per month.
“Expanding our virtual healthcare platform to include weight management is part of our ongoing commitment to listening to patients and the services they want from their local pharmacy,” said Rick Gates, Chief Pharmacy Officer, Walgreens. “By combining trusted clinical expertise with the reach of our digital and pharmacy network, we’re helping eligible patients take meaningful steps toward better health, on their own terms.”
The Clinical Infrastructure
The clinical pathway requires an online video visit with a licensed physician or nurse practitioner to evaluate the patient’s comprehensive health history. Furthermore, the platform offers robust, on-demand follow-up care. Patients can connect with their care team via chat or video between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. CT, seven days a week, to manage medication adjustments and navigate side effects—which, for Wegovy, can include severe gastrointestinal distress or, rarely, thyroid tumors.
