What You Should Know:

– Wolters Kluwer Health has announced the first major expansion of its GenAI solution, UpToDate® Expert AI, by integrating comprehensive medication information from UpToDate Lexidrug.

– The integration aims to provide clinicians with transparent, evidence-based answers for critical medication and therapeutic decisions.

GenAI for Clinical Decision Support Expands to Medication Management

Wolters Kluwer Health is rolling out the first in a series of planned expansions for its flagship Generative AI (GenAI) solution, UpToDate® Expert AI. The expansion integrates comprehensive medication information from UpToDate Lexidrug, the drug reference tool trusted by thousands of clinicians, pharmacists, and hospital pharmacies.

This move directly addresses a core need in clinical practice, as nearly a third of clinicians’ questions (30%) are drug-related, according to traditional UpToDate usage trends. Since its launch in September, UpToDate Expert AI has been deployed enterprise-wide in collaboration with more than 50 major U.S. health systems.

Trusted, Transparent AI Answers Built on Vetted Content

The integration brings in approximately 3,000 vetted drug topics from UpToDate Lexidrug, which are written and curated by pharmacists and clinical experts.

The expanded drug information is fully harmonized with the trusted content of UpToDate, ensuring that generative answers avoid potential issues stemming from outdated or inconsistent sources commonly found online.

Clinicians can use the conversational chat interface to ask natural language questions about medications, such as:

  • “30-year-old female needs Arava for rheumatoid arthritis. Is contraception required while taking?”
  • “Does risperidone or aripiprazole have a higher risk of QTc prolongation?”
  • “Allopurinol, spironolactone, lisinopril; which of these medications is causing gynecomastia in my patient?”

“Since we launched UpToDate Expert AI in September, we have been working with more than 50 major U.S. health systems to deploy UpToDate Expert AI enterprise wide. The response clearly demonstrates clinicians and healthcare enterprises want GenAI-delivered medical information built on evidence-based content and functionality that is vetted by experts in the loop,” said Yaw Fellin, SVP and General Manager, Clinical Decision Support and Provider Solutions at Wolters Kluwer Health.
