What You Should Know:
– Penguin Ai, a healthcare artificial intelligence company announced a strategic data partnership with UPMC Enterprises, the innovation and commercialization arm of healthcare provider and insurer UPMC.
– The partnership marks the beginning of a long-term collaboration, as both organizations work to build patient and provider-centered AI solutions that can be adopted industry-wide to transform healthcare operations.
Ahavi™: The Secure Data Sandbox for AI Validation
The core of the collaboration grants Penguin Ai access to UPMC Enterprises’ Ahavi™ data platform. Ahavi™ provides secure, de-identified, customized test environments fueled by primary source-verifiable, real-world data.
This platform acts as a “sandbox” where innovators can rigorously evaluate and validate new AI models in a real-world setting, without impacting actual clinical data infrastructure or healthcare operations. This capability allows new products to reach patients faster than a traditional pilot study.
Through the Ahavi™ environment, Penguin Ai plans to create and test at least three healthcare solutions designed to strengthen the doctor-patient relationship and facilitate timely access to care. The company will refine its domain-specific Small Language Models (SLMs) for commercialization.
Two initial solutions being developed and refined in Ahavi™ are:
- Patient 360: This solution summarizes dense structured and unstructured patient medical records into a snapshot of relevant information, enabling physicians to quickly review essential data right before a clinical visit. The goal is to build patient rapport and maximize visit time.
- Enhanced Prior Authorization: This aims to refine Penguin Ai’s current prior authorization SLM and Agent. The Prior Auth Agent will use AI models to estimate the probability that a request will be accepted or denied, allowing physicians to review and attach appropriate claims documentation in real-time. This “human-in-the-loop” approach balances speed with evidence-based, compassionate decisions.
“This partnership represents a significant step forward in our mission to revolutionize health care through AI,” said Fawad Butt, CEO of Penguin Ai and former chief data officer at Kaiser Permanente and United Healthcare/Optum.
