How HealthEx and TEFCA are Enabling a Secure "Apple Wallet" for Health Records

What You Should Know:

– HealthEx has launched a new platform that allows patients to access, retrieve, and share their health records in real time. The platform leverages Individual Access Services (IAS) under the federal TEFCA™ framework, putting patients in control of their data.

– They can access their records for personal use or share them with any trusted third party, including health systems, health plans, and digital health applications. Patient consent and transparency are foundational to the experience, with the ability to update and change consents at any time.

A Seamless, Secure “Apple Wallet” for Health Records

The HealthEx platform is among the first to successfully deliver end-to-end patient data interoperability using the IAS exchange purpose. It verifies identity through CLEAR, a NIST IAL2/AAL2-certified service, and captures patient consent. The platform then retrieves clinical records from providers like athenahealth through a cross-network exchange with MedAllies and CommonWell Health Alliance, both TEFCA Qualified Health Information Networks (QHINs). The platform also provides full transparency with audit trails that show who accessed data and when, while digitally enforcing patient choices. This secure and seamless patient experience functions like an “Apple Wallet” for health records.

“Patient-driven interoperability is here, working, and ready. Patients can now authenticate and consent to receive their health records in real time when they need them most to make better health decisions,” said Dr. Priyanka Agarwal, CEO of HealthEx.
