What You Should Know:

– The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and Google Cloud today announced a collaboration to launch an AI-based ASCO Guidelines Assistant.

– Developed using Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform and advanced Gemini models, this innovative tool is set to revolutionize how oncology professionals access and utilize critical clinical recommendations.

AI-Powered Access to Trusted Clinical Recommendations

A cornerstone of the ASCO Guidelines Assistant is its unwavering commitment to reliability and transparency. Recognizing the critical importance of accuracy in medical decision-making, the tool provides clear citations and sources for all information it delivers. Furthermore, it facilitates a dynamic user experience, allowing clinicians to ask follow-up questions and provide feedback, which will help to continually refine and improve the tool.

The assistant aims to provide faster, more intuitive access to ASCO’s extensive library of evidence-based clinical guidelines, enabling clinicians to integrate expert information seamlessly into their patient care plans.

“This partnership unlocks the value of ASCO’s trusted guidelines knowledge,” said ASCO CEO Clifford Hudis, MD, FACP, FASCO. “Google Cloud’s AI expertise is the engine that will drive faster access to critical information, empowering oncology professionals to make rapid, evidence-based decisions for their patients”.

Addressing Critical Needs in a Pressured Oncology Landscape

The field of oncology is currently facing mounting pressures, including rising cancer rates in younger Americans, an increasing number of older cancer survivors, a rapidly expanding array of treatment options, and growing fiscal constraints. These challenges are compounded by a projected shortage of oncologists, a strain felt most acutely in community practices and rural areas where oncologists often handle larger patient volumes and must maintain expertise across numerous cancer types. Access to timely and relevant information is therefore paramount.

The ASCO Guidelines Assistant directly addresses this urgent need by providing clinicians with a solution that sidesteps the accuracy concerns often associated with publicly available AI tools. By drawing information exclusively from ASCO’s own evidence-based, published clinical practice guidelines, the tool offers a reliable source of timely and trustworthy information.

Availability and Future Implications

The ASCO Guidelines Assistant is now available to all ASCO members. Oncology professionals can learn more and access the tool via ASCO’s website at asco.org/GA.
