Prenuvo Research Reveals Link Between Type 2 Diabetes and Brain Aging

– Prenuvo, a provider of proactive whole-body MRI scans, has presented groundbreaking research at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2024 Annual Meeting, revealing a significant link between Type 2 diabetes and brain volume loss. 

– The new study highlights the potential of whole-body MRI screening to uncover the hidden impacts of chronic conditions on brain health.

Diabetes and Brain Aging: New Insights

The study, involving over 650 participants, is one of the largest MRI-based analyses to date examining the relationship between Type 2 diabetes and brain aging. Using Prenuvo’s whole-body MRI scans and AI-powered analysis, researchers found that individuals with Type 2 diabetes exhibit reduced brain volume, particularly in the white matter of the occipital lobe, the region responsible for processing visual information and spatial reasoning.

Research Key Findings

  • White matter most affected: Significant reductions in white matter volume were observed in diabetic patients, indicating an increased risk for brain aging.
  • Association with neurological conditions: The observed brain changes suggest a potential link between diabetes and cognitive decline, including memory impairment.
  • Importance of early intervention: The findings underscore the need for early detection and management of diabetes to preserve both metabolic and cognitive health.

“This is the first time that we’ve been able to pinpoint the areas of the brain most impacted by diabetes, so physicians and patients can take specific actions to enhance those brain areas by doing cognitive exercises,” said Sam Hashemi, VP of Artificial Intelligence & Research at Prenuvo. “These results also provide evidence that we should not limit screening for this chronic disease to blood and organ-specific tests, and instead perform a more comprehensive screening.”
