GE HealthCare Inks $44M Contract with BARDA to Develop AI-Driven Ultrasound Tech

What You Should Know:

GE HealthCare (Nasdaq: GEHC) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) (Nasdaq: AMZN) announced a collaboration today, focused on developing next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) tools to transform healthcare delivery. This strategic partnership will leverage the power of generative AI to improve diagnoses, streamline workflows, and ultimately, enhance patient care.

GE HealthCare Chooses AWS as Strategic Cloud Partner

GE HealthCare has selected AWS as its preferred cloud provider, granting them access to a vast array of healthcare and generative AI services. This collaboration aims to develop innovative foundation models and applications that will empower clinicians with advanced tools to improve medical diagnostics and treatment. These new AI-powered workflows are designed to:

  • Fast-track innovation: Accelerate the development and deployment of cutting-edge healthcare solutions.
  • Boost accuracy: Enhance diagnostic and screening precision for better patient outcomes.
  • Reduce burdens: Ease workloads for healthcare providers, allowing them to focus on patient care.
  • Promote equity: Increase access to quality care for all patients.

Unlocking the Potential of Generative AI

GE HealthCare plans to leverage Amazon Bedrock, a managed service that offers secure access to leading foundation models. This technology will allow them to create bespoke generative AI applications specifically tailored to healthcare needs. By combining the security and privacy features of Bedrock with industry-leading foundation models, GE HealthCare can build and scale its own solutions to optimize healthcare efficiency, delivery, and the overall patient experience.

Accelerating Development with Cutting-Edge Tools

GE HealthCare’s development teams will utilize Amazon Q, a generative AI-powered software development assistant. This innovative tool streamlines the development process by generating code suggestions and automating tasks. Additionally, Amazon Q Business will be used to explore how multi-modal clinical and operational data can be harnessed to reduce physician workload, personalize care, and boost overall healthcare efficiency.

Generative AI Ushering in a New Era of Healthcare Innovation

The collaboration between GE HealthCare and AWS is expected to significantly reduce clinical application development cycles. By leveraging generative AI technology, development time could be slashed from years to months, accelerating the delivery of new healthcare solutions. Furthermore, GE HealthCare plans to modernize its software suite using its own foundation models, built on Amazon SageMaker, a platform for building, training, and deploying machine learning models.

Extracting Insights from Unstructured Data

The healthcare sector generates a staggering 30% of the world’s data, with a significant portion (97%) remaining untapped due to its unstructured nature. This collaboration will focus on developing multi-modal foundation models specifically designed to analyze vast quantities of unstructured medical data (such as reports, images, and patient records). These models will generate valuable insights for a wide range of healthcare applications, offering a significant advantage over traditional machine learning approaches.

GE HealthCare: A Leader in AI Innovation

GE HealthCare boasts a proven track record of investment in AI technology. For the third consecutive year, they hold the top spot on a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) list of AI-enabled device authorizations, with a commanding 72.3% share. Their recent work on foundation models includes an advanced ultrasound image segmentation tool, demonstrating the potential of generative AI to automate tasks with impressive accuracy. This tool exhibits remarkable generalization capabilities, allowing it to analyze structures not included in its initial training data, showcasing the potential for broad application across various healthcare settings.

A Partnership for a Healthier Future

This strategic alliance between GE HealthCare and AWS represents a significant leap forward in the application of AI within the healthcare industry. By harnessing the power of generative AI, the partnership holds immense potential to transform healthcare delivery, empower clinicians, and ultimately, improve patient health outcomes.

“GE HealthCare has been pioneering medical technology for more than a century. With more than one billion patients around the world touched by our products, we play an important part in improving the quality of care and have a responsibility to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible to enable precision care,” said Peter Arduini, President and CEO, GE HealthCare. “This new collaboration with AWS allows us to build on our legacy of innovation by embracing the power of AI to expedite the creation of medical technologies that we expect will redefine clinical workflows and the delivery of care.”
