Telehealth Startup Independa Closes $5 Million Series A Funding

According to the National Alliance for Caregiving, there are 65 million caregivers in the US — and 51% of their care recipients are aged 75+. To open up communication possibilities for cargivers, senior care platform provider Independa has announced its entrance into the consumer market by making its Independa TV available to anyone who is struggling to provide remote care for their aging loved one. This powerful and simple TV-based solution enhances the lives and independence of older adults aging in place and provides peace of mind to their caregivers.

The new Independa solution features picture sharing, messaging, video chat, calendaring, reminders, a help button and many other easy-to-use care and engagement elements, including Independa Life Stories. Combining the benefits of cloud-based software with the simplicity of a TV, Independa offers consumers cost-effective and easy-to-use solutions for social engagement and integrated remote care. Independa delivers a person-centric, highly customized engagement platform that is intuitive and easy-to-use for the care recipient, and provides social sharing opportunities and meaningful insights regarding the care recipient’s wellbeing to caregivers, family and friends.

Kian Saneii, Founder and CEO of Independa

“Our expansion into the consumer market is critical to our mission of transforming the aging in place experience,” said Kian Saneii, Founder and CEO of Independa. “This is on the one hand based on strong market demand. On the other hand, this solution only enhances our enterprise offerings as it is available through our corporate partners and customers. Independa has harnessed the power of the most familiar and simple to use technology – a TV and a remote – to extend and enrich independence. Our consumer launch makes it possible for anybody to purchase and use Independa for their loved one.”

Caregiver Mobile App with Apple Watch and HealthKit Integration

The company also announced the launching of its mobile app solution on Apple iPhones and iPads, including integration with Apple Watch and the Apple HealthKit platform. As an early adopter of Apple Watch and HealthKit, Independa further expands its market leadership into consumer health and remote care management for the older adult generation.

The Independa Mobile App will perform the same functions as the award winning Independa Caregiver Web Application – the cloudcare platform designed specifically for organizations and individuals providing care for seniors – right from the mobile phone.

Integrating the Independa Mobile App with Apple Watch and HealthKit will bring the power of Independa social engagement and integrated remote care to the wrists of caregivers and recipients alike. The full integration of Independa allows family members to remotely monitor the activity and wellness of aging loved ones, regardless of location or time of day.

The San Diego, Calif.-based company recently closed $4.3 million of a Series B round led by return investor City Hill Ventures, joined by undisclosed individual investors and an undisclosed venture firm.
