- Expands HCA Healthcare’s total operational footprint on MEDITECH Expanse to 72 hospitals live across the United States and the United Kingdom, scaling rapidly from an initial 22-hospital enterprise wave deployed in 2025.
- Operates on a structured wave rollout methodology: following the August 2026 completion of these two full divisions, HCA Healthcare is preparing to take its next scheduled cohort of acute facilities live in October 2026.
Enterprise Deployment Trajectory Across 72 Hospitals
The go-live brings the total footprint of HCA Healthcare facilities running MEDITECH Expanse across the United States and the United Kingdom to 72 hospitals:
- Wave Progression: Following pilot implementations in New Hampshire and North Florida, HCA began large-scale enterprise deployments in 2025 with an initial wave of 22 acute hospitals.
- August 2026 Go-Lives: The completion of the 34 facilities in August pushed the active hospital count to 72.
- Next Wave: HCA plans to deploy the platform across its next wave of U.S. and U.K. hospitals in October 2026, continuing toward an eventual enterprise scope encompassing approximately 182 hospitals and over 2,300 care sites.
Modernizing the Clinical Bedside and Data Infrastructure
HCA Healthcare handles approximately 47 million annual patient encounters, operating under a “learning health system” model that relies on aggregated clinical telemetry to identify care variances, benchmark quality metrics, and develop clinical pathways.
Replacing legacy MEDITECH Magic installations with the cloud-hosted Expanse architecture delivers several core technical and operational shifts:
- Mobile Bedside Nursing & Barcode Scanning: Equips frontline nurses with handheld smartphone access for point-of-care medication administration, mobile barcode label printing, and real-time lab review without tethering staff to rolling workstations on wheels.
- Extensible API Architecture: Uses open FHIR- and REST-based APIs allowing HCA to link third-party digital health applications, specialized surveillance algorithms, and enterprise clinical decision support tools directly into the Expanse workflow.
- Clinical Decision Support & Embedded AI: Standardizes clinical order sets, nurse documentation flowsheets, and physician chart review across acute care wards, ICUs, emergency departments, and perioperative suites.
