What You Should Know:
– FamilyWell Health, an integrated women’s mental health company, raises $8M in Series A funding led by New Markets Venture Partners with participation from existing and new investors– .406 Ventures, GreyMatter Capital, The Alix Foundation, The Donna Fund, and The Lee Foundation.
– The investment will accelerate the company’s national expansion of its maternal mental health model and extend integrated services into perimenopause and menopause care.
Addressing the Underserved Crisis in Women’s Mental Health
Women’s mental health remains one of healthcare’s most underserved and fastest-growing areas of need. The statistics underscore a critical challenge:
- Suicide Risk: Suicide is the leading cause of maternal death during pregnancy and postpartum.
- Screening Gap: Despite ACOG’s recommendation for universal screening, fewer than 10% of Medicaid members and fewer than 4% of privately insured patients are screened for postpartum depression.
- Untreated Patients: When screening does occur, barriers to care leave up to 80% of affected women untreated.
Founded in 2022 by Dr. Jessica Gaulton, a practicing physician at Harvard and a survivor of postpartum depression, FamilyWell embeds virtual women’s mental health services directly into clinics and health systems.
The model has proven effective: 70% of patients achieve clinical remission by four months, and patients are connected to care within 24 hours.
National Expansion and Midlife Care
The new funding will help FamilyWell Health drive two major growth initiatives:
- Maternal Mental Health Expansion: Scaling its proven perinatal mental health model nationwide through partnerships with health systems, clinics, and payers. FamilyWell currently covers over 200,000 lives across five states.
- Menopause Care Integration: Accelerating the expansion of its integrated care model to support women through perimenopause and menopause. Over 50 million U.S. women are in perimenopause, with up to 70% experiencing significant mental health symptoms.
“This funding enables us to deliver and expand high-quality, integrated mental health care in partnership with women’s health practices and health systems where patients already receive their care—from fertility, pregnancy and postpartum, through menopause and beyond,” said Dr. Jessica Gaulton, Founder and CEO.
FamilyWell Academy: Training the Next Generation of Providers
A core component of the expansion is growing its workforce pipeline through the FamilyWell Academy. The Academy offers certification programs, including Perinatal Behavioral Health and Peri/Menopause Behavioral Health, to equip coaches with the skills to deliver evidence-based, compassionate care and help close the provider workforce gap.
