Fujifilm and AWS Partner with Major Health System to Digitize Pathology

What You Should Know:

– FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas Corporation, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), has been selected by a leading East Coast health system to implement its Synapse® Pathology solution.

– The initiative aims to transform the health system’s pathology delivery and reduce diagnosis timelines through digitalization. The fully cloud-based Synapse Pathology platform will be deployed across five hospital sites, making it a first-of-its-kind, enterprise-wide digital transformation in North America.

Digital Backbone for Anatomic Pathology

Fujifilm’s Synapse Pathology solution will serve as the digital backbone for the health system’s anatomic pathology operations. The platform is a comprehensive pathology PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) that delivers digital images for diagnosis 1.99 hours faster than traditional glass slides. The implementation uses a hybrid storage architecture, combining on-premises infrastructure with scalable AWS cloud solutions, which provides both the performance needed for daily operations and the agility to support future growth.

A critical component of this deployment is its deep integration with Epic Beaker, the health system’s laboratory information system. This seamless interface enables automated case synchronization, real-time status updates, and efficient accessioning workflows. Pathologists, lab technologists, and clinicians will be able to access digital pathology images and case data directly within their familiar Epic environment, which is expected to improve efficiency and minimize disruptions to clinical workflows.

Mark Lloyd, vice president of digital pathology at FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas Corporation, stated that this deployment “reflects a growing trend among top-tier health systems” to adopt enterprise-wide, cloud-hosted digital pathology platforms. He noted that this not only digitizes slides but also “revolutionizes how care teams collaborate, diagnose, and treat disease”.
