What You Should Know:

– The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced a $2M Caregiver Artificial Intelligence Prize Competition through the Administration for Community Living (ACL), aiming to mobilize AI innovation to support family and professional caregivers.

– The prize competition builds on existing efforts by HHS and ACL to support family caregivers and direct care workers, including the National Family Caregiver Support Program, the RAISE Family Caregiving Advisory Council, and the Direct Care Workforce Strategies Center.

Unseen Strain on America’s Caregivers

The backbone of America’s long-term care system is supported by the approximately 1 in 4 Americans serving as caregivers for older adults and people with disabilities.

Despite their essential role, these family and friend caregivers often face emotional, physical, and financial strain, especially as staffing shortages persist in direct care.

The data reveals the personal cost:

  • Mental Health: Nearly half of caregivers report worsening mental health.
  • Physical Health: Only one in four caregivers report being in good physical health.

The $2M AI Prize Challenge Focus Areas

The $2M prize competition will fund and recognize innovators developing AI tools focused on two key areas:

  • Supporting Caregivers: Tools to educate, assist, and reduce administrative strain so caregivers (family, friends, and direct care workforce) can focus on providing safe, person-centered care and prioritize their own well-being.
  • Supporting Employers: Solutions aimed at improving efficiency, scheduling, and training within the caregiving workforce.

“America’s caregivers carry our nation’s most vulnerable on their shoulders, and they do it with a strength and devotion that rarely gets the recognition it deserves,” said Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “With the Caregiver AI Challenge, we are advancing the goals of the Make America Healthy Again Strategy Report by mobilizing innovation to lighten caregivers’ load and ensure every family has the support they need to care for the people they love.”
