American Cancer Society and Yosemite Award $6M in Research Grants to Innovative Cancer Scientists

What You Should Know:

– The American Cancer Society (ACS) and Layer Health, an innovator in AI-driven healthcare technology, have announced a multi-year collaboration aimed at accelerating cancer research. This partnership will leverage large language models (LLMs) to streamline the extraction of vital clinical data from patient medical records.

– This collaboration builds upon a successful pilot program that focused on breast cancer patients. The pilot demonstrated the platform’s ability to accurately extract complex concepts from patient charts, exceeding human capabilities.

Revolutionizing Data Abstraction with LLMs

Traditionally, gathering information from medical records for research purposes has been a laborious and time-consuming process, heavily reliant on manual effort. Previous machine learning approaches lacked scalability and struggled to generalize across diverse hospital systems.

ACS will now implement Layer Health’s advanced LLM-powered data abstraction platform to extract clinical data from thousands of medical charts of patients enrolled in ACS research studies. This includes the landmark Cancer Prevention Study-3, a population study of 300,000 participants, thousands of whom have been diagnosed with cancer and provided medical records.

Layer Health’s platform will deliver accurate, reliable, and high-quality data in significantly less time, dramatically improving the efficiency of cancer research. This will enable ACS to uncover deeper insights from medical records, ultimately driving advancements in patient outcomes.

“This collaboration with the American Cancer Society marks a significant milestone in how technology can support the fight against cancer,” said Dr. David Sontag, CEO, Layer Health. “We are proud to provide a solution that not only streamlines the research process but also empowers organizations like the ACS to scale their insights and accelerate their groundbreaking work.”
