What You Should Know:

– PointClickCare, a healthcare technology platform, and MassHealth, the Massachusetts Medicaid program launches a new Behavioral Health Treatment and Referral Platform.

– The statewide initiative aims to improve the efficiency and coordination of behavioral health care by streamlining referral processes, enhancing communication between providers, and providing real-time visibility into inpatient psychiatric bed availability.

Addressing Behavioral Health Boarding

Behavioral health boarding is a significant challenge in Massachusetts and across the country, contributing to capacity issues and delays in accessing mental healthcare. While Massachusetts has made progress in reducing boarding rates, many individuals still experience delays in receiving timely care.

The platform is designed to address the challenges associated with behavioral health boarding, a situation where individuals experiencing a mental health crisis face prolonged wait times in emergency departments or medical-surgical units while awaiting placement in an appropriate inpatient psychiatric facility. Boarding can lead to delays in treatment, increased stress for patients and families, and strain on hospital resources.

Key features of the platform:

  • Streamlined Referrals: Simplifies the referral process for inpatient psychiatric care, enabling faster and more efficient transitions.
  • Real-Time Bed Availability: Provides a centralized view of available psychiatric beds across the state, facilitating timely placement of patients.
  • Standardized Information: Standardizes admission information, improving communication and reducing administrative burden for healthcare providers.
  • Enhanced Transparency: Offers a transparent view of patients awaiting inpatient psychiatric placement, enabling better coordination and resource allocation.

The Behavioral Health Treatment and Referral Platform will be used by various stakeholders, including acute care hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, health plans, accountable care organizations, and state agencies.

“PointClickCare is honored to be partnering with MassHealth to support access to behavioral health treatment for individuals who need inpatient psychiatric level of care,” said Hamad Husainy, Chief Medical Officer at PointClickCare. “With the Behavioral Health Treatment and Referral Platform, we’re helping care team members communicate and coordinate more effectively with one another, enabling patients to quickly and efficiently receive support and placement, leading to better health outcomes.
