Nabla's AI Assistant Gets $24M Boost to Combat Clinician Burnout and Streamline Care

What You Should Know:

– Denver Health, an integrated health system and Colorado’s primary safety-net provider has partnered with Nabla, an ambient AI technology for healthcare, to deploy its AI-powered assistant across its network of hospitals and clinics.

– The collaboration marks a significant milestone for both organizations, demonstrating the potential of AI to address critical challenges in healthcare delivery, particularly for underserved populations.

8-Week Pilot Program Results

Safety-net health systems like Denver Health face unique challenges, including caring for patients with complex needs, navigating funding limitations, and addressing the growing healthcare workforce shortage. These factors contribute to a heavy administrative burden on clinicians, often leading to burnout and decreased job satisfaction.

Nabla’s ambient AI assistant offers a solution to these challenges by automating administrative tasks, streamlining workflows, and enhancing communication between clinicians and patients. During an eight-week pilot program at Denver Health, Nabla’s technology demonstrated impressive results:

  • Reduced documentation time: Clinicians experienced a 40% reduction in note-typing per patient encounter.
  • Decreased after-hours work: Clinicians saw a 13% reduction in “pajama time” – the time spent completing administrative tasks outside of working hours.
  • Improved efficiency: 82% of participating clinicians felt less time pressure during patient visits.
  • Enhanced patient satisfaction: Patient satisfaction scores increased by 15 points, with patients reporting improved communication with their doctors.

Seamless Epic EHR Integration

Nabla seamlessly integrates with Denver Health’s Epic EHR system, eliminating the need for clinicians to switch between applications and reducing time spent on documentation. The AI assistant also offers language support for Spanish, French, and Russian, facilitating communication with non-English speaking patients and caregivers.

Expanding the Use of AI for Enhanced Care

Following the successful pilot program, Denver Health has rapidly adopted Nabla, with 400 clinicians signing up for the AI assistant within the first week of system-wide deployment. The health system is now exploring further applications of Nabla’s technology, including:

  • Coding optimization: Improving Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) and Hierarchical Condition Category (HCC) coding accuracy.
  • Customized clinical note templates: Developing templates tailored to the specific needs of transgender patients.
  • Expanded access for nurses and call center support: Extending the benefits of Nabla to other members of the healthcare team.

“Denver Health is dedicated to providing the best care for our patients and community. Within days, providers using Nabla experienced improved face-to-face interactions and noted considerable improvements with work-life balance,” said Daniel Kortsch, MD, Associate CMIO & AI Officer for Denver Health. “The partnership with Nabla enables us to streamline our processes and treat more patients.”
