Remote Patient Management Platforms

Alere Connect, Qualcomm Life, and Preventice are the top three remote patient management platforms, according to ABI Research’s latest “Remote Patient Management Platforms” Competitive Assessment. Remote patient management platforms is the essential link between the patient and the devices monitoring their condition and healthcare providers has been a market that has increasingly drawn the attention of investors and healthcare players. However, development, implimentation, and adoption remains in an early stage. The study assessed remote patient monitoring platforms that connect to wearable wireless-enabled healthcare devices across criteria placed in two broad categories: Innovation and Implementation.

The results of this vendor matrix reflect the transition taking place in this market. By and large the companies that scored highest in the Innovation segment did less well in the Implementation segment and vice versa as the market shifts from vertically integrated platforms and devices to more open platform offerings.

Innovation Category

Qualcomm Life topped the Innovation category. Coming from outside the medical space and with a platform play that looks to be a free-standing business and not an accessory to a single vendor wearable mhealth device, the platform typifies many of the attributes that will increasingly drive acceptance and adoption of remote patient monitoring platforms. Alere Connect was ranked second, boosted by its platform and gateway support for a device from multiple vendors. Third in Innovation was Vivify Health, a smaller player but one with some additional innovative features including support for videoconferencing.

Implementation Category

Within the Implementation category, Alere Connect won the top spot driven by subscriber growth, integration with a range of Alere services, and the company’s growing international reach. It was followed by Preventice, a company with a far more focused offering, but one that supports its own wearable wireless device and smartphone integration. In third place was Medtronic, which scored well due to the quality of its recently acquired companies that specialize in RPM services. In the space of a year, Medtronic has acquired Cardiocom, Corventis and has a pending deal for Covidien.

Principal analyst, Jonathan Collins commented, “An important aspect of this Competitive Assessment was evaluating each vendor’s efforts and current ability to integrate a range of devices, applications and eco-system partners on their platform. Remote patient management platforms will increasingly have to be flexible to draw in the largest possible number of end-users and devices without the need for lengthy and expensive customization. However, longevity and trusted credentials in the healthcare market will also play a factor and these aspects were carefully considered as well.”
