Wyse Cloud Client Computing has completed another successful customer implementation at Seattle Children’s Hospital in Seattle, WA. With approximately 4,500 employees supporting 292,000 annual patient visits, Seattle Children’s specializes in meeting the physical, emotional, and developmental needs of children from infancy through young adulthood. The hospital is consistently ranked among the nation’s best children’s hospitals by U.S. News & World Report magazine. It’s also the primary teaching, clinical, and research site for the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. The following video describes how Wyse and Seattle Children’s were able to improve system responsiveness.

The IT team at Seattle Children’s undertook the task of improving patient care by improving the system responsiveness. The goal was to update the process whereby doctors and nurses interacted with workstations in the clinical environment. Until recently, it took a doctor several minutes to log in to the workstation for a single session. Practically every patient visit required a brand-new log in, resulting in a painfully slow process for the care providers and a poor use of their time. The IT team researched a variety of solutions for this issue and recommended that a desktop virtualization solution be deployed.
“We wanted the technology to be so fast, pervasive, and intuitive for our staff that it was almost invisible to our patients,” explains Mike Kindle, Sr. Director of Enterprise Architecture at Seattle Children’s. “As soon as we identified VDI-based desktop as our approach, we knew we wanted Citrix and Wyse as our partners. The partnership between the companies and the integration of their technologies made us confident that they would work together to help us get the solution we wanted.”
Seattle Children’s deployed a desktop virtualization solution leveraging Citrix XenDesktop® and Citrix XenApp™ in concert with approximately 3,000 Wyse Xenith next-generation zero-client devices. This implementation has accelerated systems logins from several minutes to less than 15 seconds, saving staff time and improving patient interactions; virtually eliminated desktop technical issues, enhancing patient service and saving, over the next five years, an estimated $1.2 million of IT staff time, $6 million in PC replacement costs, and $1 million in energy cost.
“Wyse Xenith next-generation zero clients have improved our providers’ access to patient data which we believe helps improve patient care and has helped save the hospital millions of dollars,” explains Kindle. “Plus, because this infrastructure enables us to manage desktops at the server level, it increases manageability, security, and availability. Our doctors and nurses can do their jobs better, without technical distractions, and our IT team can redirect their time and energy from fixing PCs to serving the hospital in more strategic roles.”
“Seattle Children’s new virtual desktops fulfills the vision of enabling users to access any applications or data from any device, anywhere, all at optimal speeds and with minimal connection times,” according to Maryam Alexandrian, Senior Vice President Worldwide Sales and Channels at Wyse. “Wyse Xenith was made for Citrix XenDesktop and it certainly shows at Seattle Children’s. It has become the ideal zero client for Citrix customers who want optimal user experience, longevity and simplicity.”
Seattle Children’s has come to see their traditional desktops in a new light. “Before, I would have said that the main problem with PCs was that their limited flexibility, security issues, and constant need for refresh took too much time and caused too much disruption,” according to Drexel DeFord, Senior VP and Chief Information Officer at Seattle Children’s. “Now I’m more aware of how much they slow implementation of new initiatives and decrease agility. In contrast, with desktop virtualization, we’re enabling our users to connect to this new service from any location on any device. And it’s all in the service of improving the quality of our interaction with patients.”
