CoverMyMeds, working with a broad group of influential industry stakeholders, today released the Electronic Prior Authorization (ePA) National Adoption Scorecard. The ePA National Adoption Scorecard is the first of its kind and highlights the current state of the ePA industry, including ePA adoption rates and implementation statuses of the industry’s largest participants.

– Annually, 186 million prescriptions require a PA. Nearly 40% are abandoned due to complex policies and procedures.
– $31 billion nationwide (or $68,274 per physician) is spent annually on paper-based PAs, with more than half of prescribers indicating that they and their staff spend up to 20 hours per week on paper-based PAs.
– 54% of EHR and E-Prescribing vendors owning the majority of the market are committed to implementing ePA. Only 22% are live with a solution.
– 67% of payers owning the majority of the market share are committed to implementing ePA, and the majority (60%) have live solutions.
– Pharmacies lead the industry with 70% of pharmacies owning the majority of the market share committed to ePA, and 67% having a live solution.
